computer slow

Post by gadekm on Fri 19 Mar 2010, 8:29 pm

Within the last month my kids computer has been running very slow. It acts like it is low on system resources. Mouse is slow to move and very choppy when it does. I haven't had a virus that I know of and no pop ups. Could this be a virus running in the back ground? Thanks,

Hi,

Let's give it a check shall we?

A few things before we start....
1. Please Read All Instructions Carefully.
2. If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
3. Please do not run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
4. If you have to go away for an extended period of time, let me know.
5. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear".
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop from any of these links:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Your antivirus software might question the file. If it does, allow it.

  • Double click DDS.scr to run it and wait for the scan to finish
  • [When finished DDS.txt will open
  • A small while later, a prompt will open. Answer Yes
  • DDS will continue scanning
  • When done, Attach.txt will open
Copy and paste the DDS.txt in your reply.

Download: CCleaner (freeware)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Run the installer, and uncheck the option to install Yahoo toolbar (unless you want Yahoo toolbar).
Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows [tab]
The following should be selected by default, if not, please select:

Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit

Next, please go [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to run Panda ActiveScan 2.0

  • Click the big green Scan now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • Once the scan is completed, please hit the notepad icon next to the text Export to:
  • Save it to a convenient location such as your Desktop
  • Post the contents of the ActiveScan.txt in your next reply
.

Re: computer slow

Post by gadekm on Tue 23 Mar 2010, 2:06 pm

ok so I did the CCleaner and it found tracking cookies and AdWare.Advertising they both were low threats.
Then tried to do the Panda scan and it ran for 8 hours only got to 36%, scanned 97787 files and seemed to be stuck at C:\windows\softwaredistri...67a\sp2qfe\danim.dll

so I stopped the scan and am going to start it again after I reboot of course because the computer has become so slow I can type 3 lines before it shows on the screen.

What if the scan stops like before? any ideas?

If that still happens, run [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] instead.
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Looks good to me...how's your system running now?

Download Security Check by screen317 from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

mouse is still slow and jumpy at times, almost like the memory or cpu can't catch up. Kids say it seems maybe a bit better, but I really don't think so.

Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe.
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.
