Win32/Cryptor Virus Has a Grip on me! Please Help!!!

Post by EricJ on Wed May 13, 2009 12:40 pm

I ran an AVG scan and the Win32/Cryptor Virus came up. This was after I had noticed my CPU running almost constantly at 100%. I have a McAfee subscription through Comcast and my pc wasn't allowing me to access the McAfee site so I tried through my Laptop and was able to get to McAfee just fine...this is when I thought something was really wrong. I called McAfee and they were NO Help, since I could not pull up the command prompt window they told me to talk to the computer manufacturer (Dell) they were no help either since my computer is out of warranty.

AVG will not update. When I try to run a scan the computer will occasionally "Blue Screen" during the scan.

Within the first 2 minutes of the scan the infection pops up.

I've already tried Malwarebytes and am having problems there also.

Here are the results from the last full scan on 5/11/09.

Meh, leave Mcafee/Dell, I can do better.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Hello.

Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean. Please see here for instructions on how to disable it:

1. Right-click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray (located down by the system clock for most configurations)
2. Choose *Settings* from the dropdown menu
3. Under the *General Settings* tab turn OFF (red x) the option to "Load Ad-Watch at Startup" (if enabled)

4. Click on the *Status* button in the left hand menu
5. Turn OFF (red x) the option for *Regshield*
6. Close that window, then right-click on the Ad-Watch icon shield again down in the system tray next to the clock.
7. Choose *Turn off Ad-Watch* from the drop menu

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

Ad-Aware?Ad-Watch did not have a *Settings* option when I right-clicked on it, it did have a *Disable Ad-Watch Live!* option, is this the option to use?

Please close all anti virus, anti malware and any other open programs/windows so they do not interfere with the running of RootRepeal.

  • Please download RootRepeal.zip from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Extract the program file to your Desktop.
  • Run the program RootRepeal.exe and go to the Report tab and click on the Scan button.

  • Select ALL of the checkboxes and then click OK and it will start scanning your system.

  • If you have multiple drives you only need to check the C: drive or the one Windows is installed on.
  • When done, click on Save Report
  • Save it to the Desktop.
  • Please copy/paste the contents of the report in your next reply.

1. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+CCrying

Drivers to delete:
UACd.sys

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACbqhohxllldbbaom.sys

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avengerís actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Re: Win32/Cryptor Virus Has a Grip on me! Please Help!!!

Post by EricJ on Thu May 14, 2009 8:51 pm

I am in the process of following your last instructions. However, when Avenger did it's computer restart the Blue "Windows is starting up..." screen has been stuck for at least 5 minutes. I am able to move the cursor with the mouse. Is this normal or do I need to shut down and repeat your last instructions?

You can try rebooting, but this time, go to safe mode if you know how to do that.

If not, here's how:

  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

When I shut down and restarted I missed the f8 timing. However the Avenger window did come up with the following text:

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV. (AVG8)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hello.
Delete your copy of Combofix you have right now.

Now do this. Re-download Combofix again, but before doing so, read this next instructions for renaming Combofix.

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Followed latest instructions. ComboFix started it's process...then a "Caution" Window came up that said...

*BleepingComputer.com *ForoSpyware.com *GeeksTogo.com

ComboFix.exe may be downloaded from any of the above sites. If you have downloaded from some other site, there's a likely chance that it may be tainted. For peace of mind, I suggest that you delete the current copy and get a fresh one. I wants me to click *OK*.

What Now?

It's probably an error, because Combofix has some checks it does before running.

One is expiration date, if Combofix isn't the latest version and it detects a new version, it asks that it's downloaded now. Your error is probably because it's renamed, but still run it. Smile

I am also getting a balloon popping up at the bottom of the page stating that my firewall is disabled. Should I turn it back on?

Hello.
Run the instructions in this next post and the balloon alert will stop.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

This will also reset your restore points.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
    "AntiVirusDisableNotify"=-
    [HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
    "EnableFirewall"=dword:00000001

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

Did the firewall come back on? if not, switch it back on manually.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Thank You Very Much.

I just updated AVG and am running a scan. I will follow all of your preventative measures.

I also will do the same for my laptop even though it isn't infected.

I have McAfee also running on my laptop, do I uninstall McAfee before installing the free AVG?

Do I need to set new restore points?

Also, should I delete/uninstall all of the programs you had me download to diagnose and fix (ie: Hijack This, Avenger, RootRepeal, etc)?

Yes, uninstall Mcafee. It is dangerous to have two AV's running at the same time.

You can delete the tools we used. Smile
