Can someone help us work out which computer deal is best please.

Post by lindy on 7th May 2009, 5:07 am

Hi,

Our family is new to this forum and unfortuantely we're not very computer savvy. We’re out to buy our first new computer. We’re trying to choose between the following two options. The first computer is $400 more expensive than the other but we are prepared to pay this extra if the first computer's superior. Alternatively are they much of a muchness - or is comuter 2 even a better deal (we've heard ATI is a better video card )Would forum users choose one computer over the other? We're listing their features and then what we need the computer for.

Arrow Quad Core Premium tower only
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 Processor
(2.67Ghz, 2 x 4Mb L2 Cache, 1066FSB)
-4096MB DDR2 RAM
-1000GB Hard Disk Drive
-512 mb Nvidia Geforce 9800GT PCI-E Video Card With TV Out
-PCI slots, PCI-E Slot, DDR RAM slots,
LAN port
-Memory Card Reader
-Dual Layer DVD Drive
-7 x USB ver2.0 ports
-10/100Mb Network Interface
-Microsoft Windows XP Home(Installed & Supplied)
-Microsoft Office 2007 Professional (60 Days Trial)
Price $Aust 1699

The second computer is $400 cheaper and comes with

CPU - Intel Core 2 DUO E8400 - 3.0Ghz 6MB Cache
MOTHERBOARD - Asus P5Q SE2 Mainboard
RAM - Kingston 4GB DDR2 800Mhz Kit
HDD - Samsung 750GB SATA2 HDD 32MB Cache
FDD/CARD READER None
VIDEO CARD - ATI HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E16x
SOUND CARD - On Board 6 Channel
LAN - Onboard 1000BT
OPTICAL DRIVE - Samsung SATA 22x DVDRW
CASE - Coolermaster Ellite 334 Case w/ PSU
OPERATING SYSTEM - Windows XP Home
OFFICE SUITE - Open Office Suite
VIRUS PROTECTION - AVG Antivirus 8 Free

Price: $1290 Inc GST.

As well as internet and word processing we want to use our new computer for

(1)Playing Flight Simulator Gold - the game includes an expansion pack. We bought this game but it won’t work on our present computer, and we don’t want to buy a new computer that it doesn’t work on either.

(2)The kids would like the new computer to also work as a tv (free to air channels) because they always want to watch competing shows and we only have one tele. Does “TV out” mean the computer has a TV card? I read you need to get Windows XP Media Centre to watch TV even with a TV card. (i.e. not Windows XP Home.) Is this true?

We've tried to research what all these things mean on the internet but it’s so confusing!

Thanks in advance for everyone’s opinions

Thanks AuroraRange,
So just to confirm - you're saying the Intel Core 2 Duo system with the ATi card is better than the quad core system with the Nvidiia card. We believe you - it's just that the system you're saying is better value was also cheaper!

To watch "free over the air stations" you will need a tuner card. They are not very expensive and fairly easy to install.

Thanks everyone for your commments. Ordering the long anticipated computer later today. We just have to resolve whether XP home is okay for running FSX, so we can tell the company making the computer which version of windows to instal. I'm gonna sniff around on this site to try and find out the answers.
