Win32/Nequel.E - Spyware Alert 2009

Post by mh on 8th April 2009, 3:30 am

Hi,

First off I'd like to apologize for not reading the important rules from this forum before trying to fix my bug. I kept on getting the Spyware Alert 2009 message so I thought I'd follow the instructions of others by using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Their error was similar to mine and I thought it'd work, which it seems like it did, but I'm not totally sure. Hence, I'm posting on this site. I haven't done anything else besides that. All instructions for what to do before posting, I have followed through on.

Here is my log from hijackthis:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware has indicated I have no bugs after fixing/removing them the first time and scanning it a second time. Please advise.

Thank you for your help.

Hello.
I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed!
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install one first!!

* Please install Avira Antivirus: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
This is a free Antivirus.

Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding.
Then reboot.
After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".
There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply.
Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

I actually did have a anti virus program installed previously but the license expired and I didn't renew it so I removed it last night thinking I'd install a new one today. Nonetheless, I have installed the anti virus software you indicated. Here is the info below:

Hello.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

I also want to see what's installed.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Use more than one post for both logs if needed.

Re: Win32/Nequel.E - Spyware Alert 2009

Post by Belahzur on 8th April 2009, 4:24 pm

Hello.

Please right click the Avira icon down in the tray (the umberella) and press "Start Update" because Avira's database isn't upto date.

I see that you are running Limewire.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

  • Java(TM) 6 Update 11
  • LimeWire 4.12.15
  • Mozilla Firefox (1.5.0.12)
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • WildTangent Web Driver

Please download the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the bolded text below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose CopyCrying

    :files
    c:\docume~1\mh\applic~1\Limewire
    c:\docume~1\mh\applic~1\Viewpoint
    c:\program files\Limewire
    c:\program files\Viewpoint
    C:\Documents and Settings\MH\Desktop\dds.scr

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies]
    "NoActiveDesktop"=-

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please post the OTMoveIt log.

Post by mh on 8th April 2009, 4:33 pm

Hi,

Before I remove those programs, I have some questions for you. I only installed Java(TM) 6 Update 11 because it was required when I first registered with geekpolice. It's not needed?

Also isn't Mozilla a good web browser to be using vs. IE? Won't removing Mozilla remove my favorites as well?

By the way, can you tell me what WildTangent Web Driver is? I don't recall installing it or it coming with my machine.

Thanks.

Hello.
Java 6 update 11/Firefox 1.5 are both old and need updating. We can install Firefox 3.0.8 directly over 1.5 without uninstalling it, but java update 11 needs to eb uninstalled because the new version won't install over it.

I figured since you still have Firefox 1.5 installed and it's a VERY old version, that you didn't use it otherwise you would of noticed Firefox constantly telling you to update.

Leave Firefox there for now.

WildTanget/Viewpoint both jump onto your machine when you install AIM.

this is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for more info.

I suggest you remove the program now.

I realize that the WildTangent Web Driver was originally installed by my computer manufacturer as it is used for the games on my machine so I have kept it. However, I have removed everything else you listed.

Earlier, I lost everything that was pasted below because my session timed out so I had to rerun the OTMoveIt3.exe. A lot of the stuff that was moved is gone. Sorry.

It's okay.
WildTanget is known to cause popups in the past, so that's why I had listed it.

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and install it.

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Select the first option where it says "This release includes the highly anticipated...".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa. (If you are running Vista, you will need to right click JavaRa > select "Run as administrator")
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:

2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.

3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or

A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Which one of the programs from the above would you suggest me to install? I shouldn't have to use them all, right?

Yes, don't use all 4.

I would recommend you installing SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster, because Adaware/Spybots removal methods aren't that good.

Thank you so much for your prompt assistance. I really appreciate it.
