I think my computer is infected with Bankerfox.A/Nuqel.E

Post by brandikinz on Sat Apr 04, 2009 1:22 am

This morning "Spyware protect 2009" kept popping up on my screen, a new icon on my desktop titled "details" appeared, and every time I tried to get rid of the Spyware protect it would pop up again with a warning for either bankerfox.a or nuqel.e saying that my computer was at risk. This isn't a program I installed so I went to task manager and disabled spyware protect. I scanned the details file with avg and it said it was infected so I deleted it. I restarted my computer and tried to start xp in safe mode. It kept stopping at \mup.sys. I didn't have time to take care of it earlier so I just shut off the computer. Could someone help me please?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Hello.

You are running two AV's, this is a bad idea as they can conflict and cause problems. I see Norton and Avira.
I would recommend that you remove Avira to avoid conflict and other future problems, it's outdated and disabled anyway.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Avira AntiVira Personal

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV. (Norton Internet Security in the second post)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

KILLALL::

File::
c:\windows\system32\SETCB.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE0.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETC1.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETEF.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETD6.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETF3.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETF1.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE5.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE8.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETEE.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETDA.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETD8.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETF0.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETC7.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETC6.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETD9.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETBE.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE7.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETC3.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETC8.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETBB.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETD7.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETBA.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETD2.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETD0.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE1.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETBF.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETC0.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETCF.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE2.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE3.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE9.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETDE.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETD5.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETEC.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETE4.tmp
c:\windows\system32\SETD4.tmp

Folder::
c:\program files\Viewpoint
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

I'm not really sure x.x The only thing that made me think there was a problem was the spyware program, the window that kept popping up with the 2 file names and the random file on my desk top. I don't know if there was anything else problematic going on so I tried to start in safe mode and that didn't work so well... However, I just tried to start in safe mode again and it stopped at mup.sys just as before.

Hi.

Combofix never really detected anything the first time. I can't see any problems here.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

This will also reset your restore points.

Why would I have pop ups with those file names on them? Is it possible that it was just spyware and that I got rid of it already? Can something else be causing my computer not to be able to start in safe mode (which I tried because of a friend's recommendation)? If these are just ridiculously useless qustions, I'm sorry to inconvenience you (if I am). I'm not very computer tech oriented.

Hello.
In the first DDS scan, I saw this file.
C:\pv.exe

But I also saw Combofix's files run at only 2mins after that file was dropped by something, probably malware. So you already ran Combofix yourself, that's probably what got rid of the infection before you came here. I think you killed this yourself.

I also see you have renamed Combofix to Combo-Fix. Have you been following someone else's instructions?

But note that Combofix shouldn't be used without supervision, Combofix is VERY powerful and can leave your machine badly damaged should something go wrong.

Lastly, can you check that pv.exe is no longer sat in the C:\ drive? Combofix log didn't show it.

I was having a friend help me over the phone, but then I had to go to work. I figured I would deal with it later, but she wasn't available later, so I found you. pv.exe looks like it is still listed on the C:\ drive.

Okay, delete the pv.exe file.

Are you still getting popups?

Deleted, and no. So... is my computer is all clean, or is there something else I should do?

P.S. thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me! ^.^

Yeah, I think your machine is fine now.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or

A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
