win32/cryptor

Post by Kobra on 3rd April 2009, 10:40 pm

Unfortunately, I can't even access this site from my desktop which is infected. Can't use the USB flash to transfer the logs over. Have run both AVG and Malwarebytes, removed the entries, but to no avail. I can only perform quick scans with malwarebytes as the full scan just freezes midway through. Can't restore can't open programs. Is this the point of no return?

I haven't been able to because it would just freeze. I'm going to try again tomorrow and I'll see if I can get a log up, so standby 1.

Well, everytime I boot into safe mode, I get a 60 second timer and this message:
"his shutdown initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
this system is shutting down, please save all work in progress and logoff
Windows must now restart because the remote procedure call (RPC) service
terminated unexpectedly"

If I boot in normal mode, it freezes as soon as it starts loading the basic tray icons. It's in a lose/lose situation right now.

Does it countdown from 60 seconds on that shut down message?

Ya. When it loads up in safe mode, I get 2 errors and when I hit ok, the countdown starts from 60. I managed to get hijackthis running in safe mode under that 60 seconds and managed to get a log up, but by the time it was done i had about 5 seconds left before i could save it to my desktop.

We can stop these shutdown errors.
Try getting a Hijack This log in safe mode again.

The next time you get 60 seconds, do this.

Goto Start > Run. In the Run box, type in:
shutdown -a
Note the space between the n and -
Hit enter.

This stops the shutdown so you can get a log up. Smile

Hello.
Bad news.

These two entries from Hijack This:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [System Kernal Support] system.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System Kernal Support] system.exe

Are backdoor bots:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

Hello.

Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show.
Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution.
So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start. Reason I am telling this is because when a system is so terribly infected and we try to clean this up manually, the damage that is already present may interfere with our removal attempts.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

Certainly, let's just exhaust whatever options we have before reformatting.

Here's the MBAM after fix.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.34
Database version: 1749

Hello.
Your version of MBAM is old.
You have version 1.34, while the current version is at 1.35.

Please download it again from link provided and install the new version.
Once the new version is installed, update it and re-run the scan.

Hmm I can't install 1.35. Setup won't open.

Also, is there anyway to get the USB flash to work again? It would make transferring files a lot easier. Or do I run the risk and possibility of stuff being infected on the USB transferring over to another computer?

Hello.
I suspected as much.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Hello.
We have to go deeper, this infection is hiding in your registry.

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV. (AVG8)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - Please PM me if I fail to respond within 24hrs.

Hello.
Nearly there now.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

KILLALL::

File::
c:\windows\Tasks\At1.job

Folder::
c:\program files\Crawler

Driver::
pjcav
upwxghbb
ALSysIO
cel90xbe

NetSvc::
upwxghbb

DDS::
IE: Crawler Search - tbr:iemenu
TB: {0494D0D9-F8E0-41AD-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - No File

RegNull:
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1229272821-220523388-839522115-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved\{A1931E8A-1B06-6F93-A786-BD062C2F8EDF}*]

RegLock::
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1229272821-220523388-839522115-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved\{A1931E8A-1B06-6F93-A786-BD062C2F8EDF}*]

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

Re: win32/cryptor

Post by Belahzur on 5th April 2009, 12:02 am

Hello.
That didn't work right.

Please make sure you put my script inside the notepad file.

All the commands need to have a seperate top line, Driver:: for example. Please make sure you copy/paste it all because it won't work otherwise.

Hello.
This looks much better now. No problem, take your time, because the malware is gone now.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

This will also reset your restore points.

I just wanna take a peek at what's installed.

  • Open HijackThis
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Alright, 2 problems I noticed.

1) It won't let me go through various restore points. It just stays on the current month at the last restore point.

Edit: Sound issue fixed.
