Laptop has become very slow. Please help

Post by priya1984 on 25th March 2009, 8:54 pm

Hi,

Last week my laptop was affected with virus and ppl at geek police did help me with it. Thank You!
But , for the past three days my laptop has become very very slow. Let me think
The explorer takes so long to open up when its icon is clicked. So, yesterday my husband installed IE7 and also the latest version of mozilla. We have removed unwanted software and guess he did a scan also.
Still i feel that the Laptop is slow. Its never been so slow. Also, many times the browser window freezes and later says that microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close. We usually select the dont send option in that.
Pl help me Sad tearing

Lets have a look around.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - Please PM me if I fail to respond within 24hrs.

Re: Laptop has become very slow. Please help

Post by Belahzur on 25th March 2009, 9:31 pm

I see a vundo infection present.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Hello.
I want to use Combofix again, too much Vundo here.

Please uninstall Mcafee again. Remember how to? Start > Control Panel > Add/remove programs.

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Good Morning. I had to log off the comp yesterday since my husband wanted it.
I shall continue the steps now.

Hello.
I still think this infection got through with that old Java installed. We'll update it with the programmers version later.

Hello.
Please install Mcafee again. Do you have Hijack This on this machine.

If you do, lets get an uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Don't need a system scan. Is there a button that says "Open the Misc Tools section"?

Hello.
Lets update Java runtime + development kit.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 4
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_13

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Select the first option where it says "This release includes the highly anticipated...".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
  • Now go back to the java page in the link above.
  • Select the SECOND option where it says This JDK includes the JRE and command-line development tools...
  • Again, click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jdk-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

You should now have installed the runtime update 13, and development kit update 13. Let me know once you've done that.

Okay, update JUST the runtime, leave the development kit.
But tell him this:

Old versions have holes malware can abuse and I can't promise that not updating it will keep the malware out.

Hello.
I'll bet Mcafee haven't updated their software of their Mcafee AV, java released update 13 about 2 days, wanna bet they haven't found that out yet? Goofy

We can install Avira. (I prefer Avira anyway, it disabled fully and stays that way until it's switched back on and won't interfere with stuff like Combofix as much)

Please install Avira antivirus otherwise you won't be protected.

1) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Dear,

I totally understand wat u mean. Now, i have uninstalled everyting of java from my laptop and tried to install Mcafee again. But, it gave me the same error. :-(
I dont wish to test ur patience any more. For some reason. i like McAfee and would like to have it back.
So, can u tell me a way to get my old java versions back? Will i find those in sun website ? Could u be generous enough to give me the link so i would be able to install McAfee again.
Sorry man..for testing ur patience.

Sir,
No. this is not the problem.
After i download the exe from my internet providers site, i try to run it. That time , a Mc Afee box opens up and says that its unable to install since the java script is not working properly. And gave me a link where i may find a solution. That particular link, since unable to copy paste to a brwser, had to manually type it. But, found nothing on that page.
I would like to know where i can find the prev version of java stuff that i had on my laptop earlier.
Thanks so very much for all the effort u are taking.
