I frequently get an error saying "WMI has encountered an error and needs to close."

szAppName : wmiprvse.exe

There was three similar files which I got rid of two of them and then I found out I had the System32 folder. How do I get rid of the System32 folder?

Solved Re: Hey is this okay or is it bad?

Post by Belahzur on 26th February 2009, 9:38 am

Hello.
Winlogon has been patched, and I think we can fix it along as it's not patched by Virut or Sality. Both of which are unfixable.

Delete these folders in bold:

C:\c0mb0f1x
C:\C0mb0F11zoo

  • Download combofix from here
    [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
    [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Please disable your local AV (Anti-virus) by right clicking it's icon in the tray, and exit it. See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV. (what AV are you running may I ask? there is no trace of ANY AV in any of your logs)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
    ***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
    Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Afterwards I saw the screen "blink" (like when you refresh) and I did another scan in HiJackThis and this came up which I think is bad:

Hello.
We can't use Combofix right now because there's a rootkit on this machine.
CF also says there is an AV present, but it's just two weird symbols, what AV do you currently have installed?

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

    The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avengerís actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

I have an antivirus called Alyak. Should I get rid of it?

Also it seems that the avenger didnt detect any rootkid for some reason and the "black command window" didn't come up briefly.

Here is the log:

Hello.
Please uninstall Alyak, because it's interfering with Combofix.
Once it's uninstalled, please re-download Combofix so it can get the updates and run in full function mode.
Please install the recovery console when you run Combofix too.

Post the log when done.

Ok so I did that and ran Combofix. Didn't work.
It seems that the hacker is online (if he can).
He prevented my internet connection from working propertly so I had to connect to another one.
Please help I need to get rid of this junk as soon as possible.

Well it might have done it for now.
Please re-download Combofix again, but this time, do as follows:

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

See if Combo-Fix will run.

Hello.
Are you using a theme software maybe? winlogon has been modified, but Combofix doesn't find it as infected. We'll run a scan on the file, but we have to get rid of some leftovers.
Do you also use a PSP? Combofix has found a suspicious locked registry key, media manager for psp.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

KILLALL::

File::
c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\Macromedia\Common\c57d80381.dll

DirLook::
c:\documents and settings\JosephK\Application Data\Red Kawa

FileLook::
c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows-nt\currentversion\drivers32]
"wave1"=-
"midi1"=-
"mixer1"=-
"aux1"=-
"midi2"=-
"wave2"=-
"aux2"=-
"mixer2"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"%windir%\\system32\\drivers\\svchost.exe"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=-
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
"DisableNotifications"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

Solved Re: Hey is this okay or is it bad?

Post by Belahzur on 28th February 2009, 1:39 am

Hello.
It didn't get deleted, it's there. Just refresh once you have posted the log.
Some weird values keep returning, but I think it's safe to say they aren't malicious, just random numbers. One more round to delete a malicious file and I think we can say this is a wrap.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

KILLALL::

File::
c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\Macromedia\Common\c57d80381.dll

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
"wave1"="wdmaud.drv"
"midi1"="wdmaud.drv"
"mixer1"="wdmaud.drv"
"aux1"="wdmaud.drv"
"midi2"="wdmaud.drv"
"wave2"="wdmaud.drv"
"aux2"="wdmaud.drv"
"mixer2"="wdmaud.drv"

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

Yep, looks fine to me now.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

This will also reset your restore points.

Now lets install a new AV (Avira)

1) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Let me know how the machine is running now.

Solved Re: Hey is this okay or is it bad?

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
