Solved help on Spyware.ISpynow please

Post by AZmike on Fri Feb 20, 2009 4:56 am

Hello,

I have read another topic on this same subject, and it seemed to have helped them. I have the identical symptoms. Periodically I will get a false windows security message, saying Windows has detected unauthorized activity. However the only action to take is "Protect". The virus mentioned is Spyware.ISpynow. I have read other blogs and data indicating that this is not the actual virus, but the malware is a site redirection and keylogger.

I have downloaded HijackGPthis.exe from another computer, as the virus seems to be blocking all available downloads. I have also tried to run some of the typical spyware detectors like spybot S&D, but with the same problem. The trouble is that while they are now on the machine due to disk transfer, I am unable to run these applications. They seem to launch but give no feedback window. I have no log to show for this reason.

I have the ability to load other software from an uninfected computer, via USB disk swap. It is questionable how much can be run however due to the above blocking. Please advise.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello.
Sounds like tdss, hopefully this won't be blocked.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avengerís actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Solved avenger.txt

Post by AZmike on Sat Feb 21, 2009 3:33 am

Hi,

Thanks so much for helping. I was not able to run the avenger.exe extract directly, as it the virus blocked it. However, I was able to sneaker net the app over from another computer via a thumb drive. It ran, and the log is below. I have to say that the redirect on the web browser (Firefox) seems to be gone at least for now. But the security popup is still there doing its thing. Anyway, I hope this information helps.

Regards,

Mike

Yep, the popups will keep happening, but were winning. We only unearthed it for now, so we can see what's going on.
Lets kill it now.

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+CCrying

Drivers to delete:
TDSSserv.sys

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSpaxt.sys

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

Solved script executed

Post by AZmike on Sat Feb 21, 2009 5:22 pm

Hi,

Things seemed to go just as you had typed, although the popups are still with me, and the browser redirect is still there. From the log it does seem that the first layer problem might have been deleted however. Just as a quick experiment I can say that the application blocking is still there as well. Thanks much for your help, and I hope the information is useful.

Regards,

Mike

Solved Re: help on Spyware.ISpynow please

Post by Belahzur on Sat Feb 21, 2009 5:29 pm

Hello.
The rookit is removed, but malware still remains. We've only removed the top layer so far.
Lets give MBAM a try now the rootkit is gone.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Solved Mbam

Post by AZmike on Sat Feb 21, 2009 6:17 pm

Hi,

I had to thumb drive mbam over again, but got it to install. It did do an update as well. It found a good number of things, and did a reboot. For now it seems that the redirect on the browser and the security pop up are gone. Not 100% sure it is all good yet, but looks like it to me. Let me know if there is more to it... the log from mbam follows.

Thanks so much for your help,

Solved DDS.txt

Post by AZmike on Sat Feb 21, 2009 6:35 pm

Hi,

Still no security pop ups, things have improved it seems. I still am having trouble loading via the internet, seems that maybe firefox settings are blocking, I might have to check that out. Anyway, app copied over and run. DDS.txt data is below.

Thanks again,

Solved Java

Post by AZmike on Sat Feb 21, 2009 7:18 pm

Hi,

Those 2 actions completed. Things on the computer seem to be good and stable, with the exception that I still cannot download using Firefox. It could be the security settings were messed up by the virus, but I can't seem to fix them. Some time back on a different computer I ended up fixing them by updating my version of Internet Explorer, which I came to find out Firefox piggy backs for its security settings. That did the trick, so I will give that a shot. If you have any other insight, fire away, but I don't think it is explicitly a virus issue. To be clear, there are no more pop-ups or redirects within the browser, so things are running good.

Below is a log from the JavaRa.

Thanks again for your help, and let me know if there are any more steps here.

Regards,

Mike

Solved Re: help on Spyware.ISpynow please

Post by Belahzur on Sat Feb 21, 2009 7:27 pm

Hello.
Everything looks good to me.
Just uninstall Firefox and re-install it.

Sometimes malware effects browsers so much they become somewhat corrupt.

Uninstalling Firefox doesn't get rid of it's folders, so you have to do that manually.

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Mozilla

You won't be able to see the Application Data folder unless hidden files are shown.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or

Solved Works great, thanks for the help

Post by AZmike on Sat Feb 21, 2009 7:56 pm

Hi,

You guys rock. I did figure out my file copy problems, turns out a number of things were set custom in the windows firewall settings. That had turned off file copy (from things like ZIP) and downloads. Have it all working now. I will get some of the other goodies going too. I very much appreciate the help, and you can consider this closed.

Regards,

Mike
