XP? Hang on let me dust off the old archives...lol

Are you saying that you manually start all windows updates before you receive this error?

Is it within service pack 3, and why are updates not set too automatic?

Right click the command prompt and select Run as Administrator.

In command prompt, type the following command and hit Enter:

regsvr32wintrust.dll

Try to update now......If this doesnt work try the following:

Disable your Firewall, your Antivirus and any download accelerator software you may have installed.

Verify the Language Settings

Start Internet Explorer.

Click "Tools", and then click "Internet Options".

Click the "General" tab, and then click "Languages".

In the "Language" list, make sure that the operating system language
version is included. If the operating system language version is not on the
list, click "Add", click the language in the "Language" list, click "OK",
click "OK", and then click "OK" again.

Reset Internet Zone Security

Start Internet Explorer.

Click "Tools", and then click "Internet Options".

Click the "Security" tab, and then in the" Select a Web content zone to
specify its security settings" box, click "Internet".

Click "Default Level", and then click "Apply" to set this zone to
Medium security.

Click "OK".

Verify that the Date and Time Are Set Correctly

In the bottom right corner of your screen, double click the time. This
will open the Date and Time Properties window.

Please check that all details are correct including the year, the Time
zone and that AM/PM is set correctly.

Click OK.

If the problem persists despite performing above troubleshooting steps, I'd
like you to perform below guidelines to download and install a new Windows Update Agent as the current one might be corrupted.

Save this file to your local drive c:/

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

Right click command prompt and select 'run as administrator'

Type c:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce in the command prompt and hit enter.

Follow the instructions to install the Windows Update Agent.

restart the computer after the installation.

After restarting the PC, click on Start and choose Windows Update and it
will open a new Internet browser.

A box will prompt asking permission to install the Windows Update
software, click Install and proceed to download the updates.

If it still fails, type the following commands in command prompt, pressing
ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Let me know if any of these solutions help

Regards

Download this Registry Fix file:

http://vistarewired.com/wp-content/CheckSURTroubleshoot.bat

You then need to open it as administrator by right clicking and choosing Run as Administrator.

When you run it, it will make two registry changes that allow your computer to run CheckSUR. Once applied, you will need to download, install and run CheckSUR.

For 64 bit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8BD75C06-D9F1-4700-ACF3-3A58D533597A

Shutdown and re-boot, then run Windows Update from the control panel!
