Solved go.google and defrag problems

Post by sbranfman on 18th January 2009, 12:23 am

Any link of google redirects me to go.google. I can't use any anti virus programs, after 5 minutes only 3 objects scanned.
Also my computer wont let me run a defrag. I get an error "Disk defragmenter could not start"
What should I do?

My computer is an ancient Dell Inspiron 600M with Win xp

Solved Re: go.google and defrag problems

Post by Belahzur on 18th January 2009, 1:22 pm

Bad news.

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

Solved Re: go.google and defrag problems

Post by Belahzur on 18th January 2009, 8:06 pm

Hello.
I see you have Viewpoint Manager, this is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Additional info: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar

Now lets see what we can fix.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [freestyle] lockx.exe

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Delete this folder in bold:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Delete this file in bold:
C\Windows\system32\lockx.exe

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Solved Re: go.google and defrag problems

Post by sbranfman on 18th January 2009, 8:46 pm

I removed viewpoint manager and media player.

When I ran hijack this, I could not find:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

but I found the other 2 and fixed them.

I deleted:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

but, I cannot find C:\Windows\system32\lockx.exe in my computer. I tried a search for it also, and nothing came up.

And when I click the link to download the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, it says my internet doesn't work... so I guess a virus is preventing that too?

Also, from the post before the last one, I could not open the links to the recomended articles. But, I will get on a friend's computer later to try to read them.

OYE, any other advice? Thanks again for helping me.

Solved Re: go.google and defrag problems

Lets run a rootkit scan.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Solved Re: go.google and defrag problems

Post by Belahzur on 18th January 2009, 10:33 pm

MBAM missed a file.

Please download the Pocket Killbox from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

1. Open the Killbox.
2. Under "Full path of file to delete", copy and paste in the following:

c:\windows\system32\TDSSmtvd.dat

3. Press the Red X to delete the file.
4. It will ask if you want to make a backup of the file we deleted, select Yes to the prompt.
5. It will now delete the file, and popup with another prompt saying so, press Ok.
6. Close the Killbox.

What problems remain?

As far as I can tell, everything is working now. That is great, thank you so so much.

Also, how can I write a review or give feedback for your help?

Hello.
If you want to switch AV's, please uninstall AVG first, running two AV's is bad as they conflict with each other.

I would recommend ONE!! of these AV's.
1) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user.
