Usually passwords which contain number and strange characters like !@#$%^&*()_+ will be more difficult to hack.

why is that so?

Basically, there are a few kind of password cracking methods.

One of them is known as 'dictionary attacks'. Dictionary attacks compares a set of words, against a database of words. This database is a text file with thousands of words usually listed in alphabetical order.

For instance, suppose that you have a dictionary file that you downloaded from a site, the English dictionary file contains one word per line starting with number all the way to words starting with the letter 'z'

The other is 'Brute Force attacks'. Brute force attacks can crack any password, given sufficient time. Brute force attacks try every combination of special characters, numbers and letters until the password is cracked. Many password cracking tools let you specify such testing criteria as the characters and password length to try.

A brute-force test can take quite a while depending on the password complexities, and the speed of the computer running the cracking software.

So if your password is apple, it will be hacked in a few moments, especially given that it is one of the first words in the dictionary. If your password is apple1#$, it might take quite a long time before it is cracked with a Brute Force method.
