Solved Unable to Download HijackThis

Post by cucad8 on Fri Jan 02, 2009 11:52 pm

Seems I have a Vundo, virtumonde virus, and am unable to get rid of it. Saw this site, and tried to download hijack this to get help with my problem, but it says it is blocked from downloading by my security zone policy. Not even too sure what that means. Possibly a setting I have, but any help with that initially, so I could then get help with this virus would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

What link did you try downloading from? an official site like bleepingcomputer, or one of our mirrors?

Post by Belahzur on Sat Jan 03, 2009 12:37 am

Okay, lets run a rootkit scan.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] or [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box blank.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avengerís actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

When I try the second step of the open/uninstall list, when I select save, it shuts down HiJackThis, so was unable to post those.

Solved Re: Unable to Download HijackThis

Post by Belahzur on Sat Jan 03, 2009 1:30 am

Hello.
Okay, there is no rootkit present, but we need to find out what's going on.

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Please disable your local AV (Anti-virus) by right clicking it's icon in the tray, and exit it.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hmm, right clicking on the McAfee Antivirus logo does not give me the ability to close or exit it. Which is probably what is preventing me from downloading the file. When I try, I select save, and nothing happens.

Solved Re: Unable to Download HijackThis

Post by Belahzur on Sat Jan 03, 2009 1:45 am

Hello.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please make sure Teatimer is disable before we do this, otherwise this fix will fail.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe"
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: karina.dat vkfcas.dll

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Solved Re: Unable to Download HijackThis

Post by Belahzur on Sat Jan 03, 2009 1:55 am

Okay, lets use the avenger to get rid of these that we can see so far.

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+CCrying

Files to delete:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\karina.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vkfcas.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.

4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Solved Re: Unable to Download HijackThis

Still won't let me download the MBAM program or combofix. Still giving me same window to select to save file, but then not actually downloading the file.

I don't know if this will work, but lets see.

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to your desktop.
Double click on Rooter.exe to run the tool.
A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt.

Post that file in your reply.

Solved Re: Unable to Download HijackThis

Post by Belahzur on Sat Jan 03, 2009 2:37 am

I think there is a hidden dropper somewhere.

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click Yes when prompted.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Close My Computer.

Find this file in bold:
C:\boot.ini

Double click it and open it with Notepad.
Copy and paste everything inside it back here.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Click "Generate startuplist"
  • Click "Save List..." (generates startuplist.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello.
I can only suggest you use another machine to download the tool, and transfer them via a USB stick.

If you can get it running by running it from a USB stick, get MBAM running first, remove anything found, then run DDS.

Solved Re: Unable to Download HijackThis

Post by Belahzur on Sat Jan 03, 2009 7:06 pm

I think we can kill it now.
We need to use the avenger again.

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+CCrying

Files to delete:
c:\windows\system32\ddcYrQgg.dll
c:\windows\system32\tuvVMdDw.dll
c:\windows\system32\vkfcas.dll
c:\windows\system32\ggQrYcdd.ini2
c:\windows\system32\djgohmom.dll
c:\windows\system32\dbrmcuxb.ini
c:\windows\system32\bxucmrbd.dll
c:\windows\system32\mcrh.tmp
c:\windows\system32\eligmahq.ini
c:\windows\system32\ggQrYcdd.ini
c:\windows\system32\ddcYrQgg.dll
c:\windows\system32\tuvVMdDw.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.

4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Solved Re: Unable to Download HijackThis

Alright, it fixed those problems. Not sure just yet how to tell if anything else is wrong. Will try running spybot and mcafee, see if anything comes up.

Am not too sure what you mean about not using trusted zones. Is that an option I select or de-select somewhere? I am just going to uninstall stumbleupon, was unsure about mcafee.
Thank you very much for all of your help and attention. It is greatly appreciated.

If at anytime you visit a website and it asks if you want to add it to your trusted zone, disallow it is all I mean. Smile

If your gonna surf around abit to test it out, lets make sure this doesn't get back in.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or
