Solved Browser is redirecting - AntiVirus Trigger?

Post by JCosta04 on Thu Dec 25, 2008 2:20 am

Somehow, my mother got AntiVirus Trigger on her computer last night and I've been efforting to remove it and someone suggested this forum for help. I've run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Spybot S&D, CCleaner and AntiVir PE Classic, and I no longer have the icons in my system tray, but anytime I go to a search engine, it redirects me somewhere I obviously didn't intend to go. I'm enclosing my HijackThis! Log in hopes that someone here can assist me:

Post by Belahzur on Thu Dec 25, 2008 2:26 am

Hello.
You are running more than one AV (Anti-virus).
This is a bad idea, they conflict and cause more problems.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Any "Norton" products.
  • Any "Symantec" products.

=====

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines: (if present)

    O2 - BHO: AVG Safe Search - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Services] C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\services.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AnvTrgr] "C:\Program Files\AnvTrgrsoftware\AnvTrgr.exe

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose CopyCrying

    :processes
    explorer.exe

    :files
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\services.exe
    C:\Program Files\AnvTrgrsoftware

    :commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please post the OTMoveIt log.

Once OTMoveIt has done, lets use MBAM.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Hello.
MBAM is clean and the two malware lines and files are gone, what problems remain?

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

Solved Re: Browser is redirecting - AntiVirus Trigger?

Post by Belahzur on Thu Dec 25, 2008 2:23 pm

Okay, we need to go deeper.

  • Download combofix from here, use the top links - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hello.
Your flash drives are infected, do you have any external drives? (USB memory sticks, external HD, etc)

Solved Re: Browser is redirecting - AntiVirus Trigger?

I see it was hooked up when CF was run.

Once we clean these leftovers, we need to protect the drives again, so DO NOT surf the net until we are done here.

Hello.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • AVG8

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

KILLALL::

Driver::
navigator
deebn

File::
C:\diopero.exe
c:\windows\Tasks\durwbwtc.job
c:\windows\fd.dll
c:\documents and settings\HP_Administrator\S87ekhV.exe

Folder::
C:\_OTMoveIt
c:\program files\AVG
c:\documents and settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\AVGTOOLBAR
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{173ffb8a-d0af-11dd-8965-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{d2663234-d0af-11dd-bf98-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\msqpdxserv.sys]

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

Solved Re: Browser is redirecting - AntiVirus Trigger?

Post by Belahzur on Thu Dec 25, 2008 2:59 pm

Delete this folder in bold:
C:\Qoobox

Please download Flash_Disinfector from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • First, download it to your desktop.
  • Now double click it to run it and will tell it you what to do when you open it.
  • It will temporarily kill explorer.exe and your desktop will go blank.
  • Let Flash_Disinfector do it's job and it will restart explorer.exe for you.
  • It will make a dummy autorun.inf in the root of every drive.
  • You can now delete Flash_Disinfector.exe.

Still getting re-directs?

Solved Re: Browser is redirecting - AntiVirus Trigger?

Post by Belahzur on Thu Dec 25, 2008 3:12 pm

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or

A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
