I got off work at about 7 mst and was browsing digg.com (legitamate social news site). I was reading the comments for some humerous animated gif somebody created featuring president bush and the shoe thrower. Inside people were linking to various "spin-offs" of the gif and I beleive I contracted the problem from one of these. (link to the comments: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I've looked back through the comments and I think it might have come from a link someone posted from a site called sidewayspony, but I'm not sure. All I know is that I was looking at several gif images and once I closed them I began getting pop-ups spammed onto my screen.

I had to leave soon after so I closed my browser and ran a system scan in AVG anti-virus. When I returned approx. 2 hours later, there were a few things that had popped up on their own and the scan had finished (usually takes 1.5 hours). It found several infections and it told me I had to restart to remove them completely. When my computer rebooted it gave me a RUNDLL error saying "something\windows\system32\vgdhnric.dll specified module couldn't be found." There was also a "googleupdate had to close" error with the prompt to send to microsoft or don't send.

Anyway, to keep things as breif as possible while still being specific, the past six-seven hours have been spent googling, running AVG and Ad Aware several times (Ad Aware found some stuff too but it didn't fix the symptoms) with no luck and finally ending up here. The pop-up spam symptom was gone after running AVG the first time, but there are other alarming symptoms remaining.

-First, I cannot update AVG free anti-virus 8. (Ad Aware was the same way until I ran it, now it's updated, found some more things, but still no luck) The entire update process from within the program tells me I cannot connect. A pop-up comes up telling me to do it manually by visiting their site. I try to go to avg.com but that too is blocked. (unable to find server blah blah blah) free.avg.com is also blocked by this thing. Over the course of my googling and trying to solve this it seems this virus has blocked access not just to avg, buy many other sites that contain information or software to help fix this.

-Second, I have to be careful with google links because when I click them, the virus routes it to some other site which sometimes tries to download more crap onto my computer. I've found that clicking the "cached" button prevents this, but it's still alarming. I can also sometimes get around this by copy+pasting the link into my browser instead of simply clicking on it.

-Third, there have been many strange things appearing in my task manager throughout this ordeal. Most alarming was a csrssc.exe (apparently different from csrss.exe which is a windows essential process) which I terminated and have not seen again.

-Additional problems include: being able to install spybot search and destroy but not open it, pc "thinking" light coming on at random times for 20 seconds or more, computer running somewhat sluggish, and I'm just all around very concerned that this is also some type of trojan or keylogger... so I'm scared to death to log in/use passwords for anything vital. Additionally, I've had my computer actually freeze up on me once already and I'm worried this things eating at vital system files.

I'm sorry this is so long, but I'm new here, tried a lot of stuff already, and wanted to be as specific as possible. I really, really, really, really appreciate any advice you can give me and really hope there is a solution other than erasing the disk and starting from scratch.

Thank you

    ***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

    **Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
    Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Solved Re: It's 3am and I'm at my wits end

Post by cory1111 on Thu Dec 18, 2008 7:33 pm

I managed to run combofix which told me I had a rootkit. It ran, rebooted, everything seemed fine, I was able to update avg, links weren't being redirected, was able to update windows, etc. Upon updating windows and another restart, the symptoms had returned. I ran combofix again, it told me I had a rootkit again and fixed it in about half the time as it did before. Right now everything seems fine, but I worry symptoms will return upon my next boot up and/or I am still possibly being keylogged.

Any advice? I'm running Ad-Aware and AVG again, then I'm going to try another reboot. I've heard that rootkits can only be fixed with a complete disk reformat, is that true?

Hello.
Please post the latest log so I can see what's still on the machine, and then once leftovers are removed, it will stop respawning.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

File::
c:\windows\Tasks\SpywareRemover Scheduled Scan.job

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Cory\Application Data\SpywareRemover
c:\program files\Ideazon

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\Currentversion\policies\explorer\Run]
"ZboardTray"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\Zboard]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=""
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\TDSSserv.sys]

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

One more thing left.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], or

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Solved Re: It's 3am and I'm at my wits end

Post by cory1111 on Thu Dec 18, 2008 10:27 pm

you guys are lifesavers! Everything seems to be in order and working fine. Thank you for the tips on prevention, most of which is stuff I knew but obviously just didn't follow regularly enough. After this scare I certainly won't be taking any chances with not updating and so forth, so hopefully I won't be a repeat Yikes

I'm off to clean things up, make sure EVERYTHING is up to date, and run a defrag when it's all done. This was malware that was totally out of my league of abilities to handle, so I can't stress enough how much you guys helped. Thank You!

I'll let you know if I encounter any problems.
