How can I remove dl client from my machine

Post by horahack on 6th November 2015, 1:33 pm

I keep getting a nag box pop up that says dlclient has stopped working. When I close the box it knocks out my system sound. I've checked add remove but can't find any programs by that name, but this constant warning is interrupting my work. Kaspersky AV show no threats, but it happens almost constantly. Anyway to stop this.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
*************************************************************************
Go into Device Manager and see if there are any yellow warnings anywhere.

Thanks, Dave. Not sure where device manager is: I see Devices and printers, but no yellow warnings. It's a windows 7 64 bit OS .

Thanks

Ok, let's try this. Right-click on My computer and select Manage. You should be able to find Device Manager there. Click on it. If you can't find it just click on Start, Help and type in Device Manager. It will show you how to open it.

Okay.  In Device Manager now.  There is one unknown device with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, I double clicked it and it says, windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43) Location Port_ #0004 Hub_ #0005

Can't you get more information on that device. Try right-clicking and select Properties.

Dave, now when I go to device manager I don't see the yellow triangle anymore. I just upgraded FireFox. You think that fixed it? The nag box usually pops up when I play Youtubes. I'll try that and get back with you

Re: How can I remove dl client from my machine

Post by horahack on 9th November 2015, 12:34 am

Dave. I think that got it, haven't seen the dlclient box lately.

Why won't my AV catch these PUPs. I'm running Kaspersky, which I understand is supposed to be pretty good. It catches everything else. I get popups from time to time from SecureAnywhere an AV that I uninstalled last year. There must be a trace of this program somewhere in my registry, it warns me that I'm not protected. I also have MS Essentials, but I keep it disabled. I'm wondering if this may be giving me false readings, like there are no PUPs when there are.

Is there anyway to enable a PUP scan in Kaspersky, or can you recommend something to scan for PUPs. They seem to be a re occurring problem

Thanks

Why won't my AV catch these PUPs
Because they are not viruses. PUPS stand for potentially unwanted programs. Although not really destructive, they can cause a lot of problems.

There could be remnants left of that AV. Take on a look in C/ Program Files and see if there's anything left there.

I think the fulltime version if MBAM will catch those. You can try the free trial offered by MBAM and you will see popups that it has stopped some PUPS.

I'd like to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

•Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

•Click the button.
•For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

  • Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.

•Check
•Click the button.
•Accept any security warnings from your browser.

  • Leave the check mark next to Remove found threats.

•Check
•Push the Start button.
•ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
•When the scan completes, push
•Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
•Push the button.
•Push
A log file will be saved here: C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt

Dave, looks like everything is working fine now. I had an FLV file converter that I had downloaded from the Softtonic site so it was probably bundled with adware, maybe why it was removed The desktop icon has changed and when I click on it I get a message saying it has changed or moved. Is there anyway of getting this back, or maybe you know where I can download one minus the malware. Otherwise everything looks good.
Thanks

You can probably download it from Major Geeks website. Everything there is safe. Just do a search for it.

Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
Click Disk Cleanup from there.

Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.

This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)
***************************************************
This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.

Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:

  • Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Create Registry backup
  • Purge System Restore Points
  • Re-set system settings

Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.
**************************************************
I suggest using [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's easy and it's free.

Check out [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for tips and free tools to help keep you safe in the future.

Also see [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for free cleaning/maintenance tools to help keep your computer running smoothly.
Safe Surfing!

Dave, I guess I spoke too soon.  The dlclient box just popped up, killed my sound in the middle of a recording project.  It seems to happen when I play Youtubes, especially if I download anything using Download Helper.  I guess I can live with this if we can't fix it, but it sure plays havoc with my recording interface, because when I click to kill the box, it drags my system sound slider all the way down to mute.  It takes a minute before it drags down the volume so I have to wait for it, pull it back up and resume recording.

I will follow up on your last instructions in a bit, need to finish this recording project before dl client pops up. Maybe your final instructions will fix it. I think the problem is not so much the dl client stopping, but Windows wanting to tell me about it. Maybe the warning could just be disabled.

Ok. Ran the disk cleanup, did all but remove the tools, thought we might still need them, dl client box is still popping up killing my system sound. Checked Devicd Manager, the yellow triangle with the exclaimation mark is back, says unknown device.
The only new device I'm using on this laptop is a new camera that is only plugged in when I need to transfer AVIs to my harddrive, and my Personus AudioBox recording interface, which is always plugged in. I think the AuidoBox uses ASSIO drivers. I'm afraid to mess with driver updates because I need this device to do my job, but I have a feeling this may be a driver issue

That appears to be your problem. I'm afraid I can't help much with it except to tell you to try to update the driver for that device.
