Important Photoshop Alternative

Post by Doctor Inferno on Thu Dec 27, 2007 4:42 am

Here are some good apps that can be used as a photoshop alternative, the good thing is that they are free! Afraid :

-Paint.net (windows all)

Code:
http://www.getpaint.net/download.html

If all you want is a quick image retouch, Photoshop is overkill. Paint.NET, on the other hand, is an open-source freeware editor with all the essentials, including tools to crop, rotate, resize images, adjust colors, and create collages.
Unlike most free image editors, Paint.NET supports layers and has an actions manager. The pleasing interface boasts semitransparent windows for ease of use.
I have tried this software personally before and i like it's simple interface, it's installation size is also smaller and it is also lighter on the system.

GIMP (Windows XP & Mac OS X)

Code:
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

This is one of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around, the upgrades make the GNU Image Manipulation Program eminently comparable to Photoshop. Older features include channels, layers and masks, filters and effects, tabbed palettes, editable text tools, and color operations such as levels. New improvements include scalable brushes, revised selection tools, a new color menu, full-screen editing, a new crop tool, improved printing, red eye removal, perspective clone, lens distortion, and more. It even has regex-based pattern matching for power users.

This app provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. Even the installation process has gotten simpler, with no need to download and install the GTX Runtime Environment separately. Extremely powerful and easy to work with, GIMP is ideal for both amateur and pro photographers, Web designers, or anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.

Of the above, I recommend GIMP 8)

Great work Doc, I've read several of your posts and found them to be very good. Here my preference is for Paint.net as it feels easier to use, for my needs.

The latest stable version for GIMP is 2.6.4.

I think the "8)" represents a smiley and not used as a version number

Haha. Yes, it used to be a smiley until it conflicted with people who want to use it as an ordered list.

It's very likely your Linux distribution already comes with a GIMP package.

Re - above post, when I clicked on download from the Paint.net page, Avast has flagged it as a virus/worm and told me to abort. What do you suggest?
