SLOW computer after running scans

Post by Celina268 on Fri 24 Oct 2014, 7:42 am

First topic message reminder :

This computer is my Father in Laws. He can't do anything with it unless he's in safe mode. If in normal, it won't open anything without it taking at least 30 minutes to open. I've run Malwarebtes but nothing came up. I am not sure what else to do. I am sure there is a virus somewhere, but I can't find it. He asked me to work on this months ago, and I forgot about it. They are here for a surprise visit tomorrorw and I remembered about you guys. You're my last hope! I am not sure of the specs. It's a Dell Laptop, they run Windows XP. I am not sure of the bit...I can't remember how to check.

Thank you in advance!

Not that I know about. What happens when you try to unzip it?

well, i double click on it and it gives me two options in order to open it. I can use the web to pick a program or choose a program from the options it gives me. None of the options are winzip or 7-zip. I checked the web option. It brings me to a site where I can download unzippers....but when I do, I still can't open the file.

You can download and install an unzipper program. Most of them have a 30 day trial period.

I have tried that. 6 of them. I got one to work last night. I just ran out of time to stick it on the usb or cd and finish.

ok, I guess I don't have any clean CDs or USBs. I don't have time to run to the store to get another one. I know testing the RAM is important, but can we forget that part for the time being?

My father in law is coming back tomorrow and I venture to say he's going to want his laptop back. Do you think it would be worth just system restoring it to as early as I can get it??

You told me there was no Restore Points prior to when this problem started? Testing the RAM is very important because it's looking more and more like a hardware problem.

Ok. I'll keep trying. I may have to find someone to help me. As I am proving not so capable.

You should try to have someone test the RAM.

Still looking for someone who knows how to do it. I have also been reading up on how to do it. I didn't know you save bios before you boot. I think a few more hours of reading and I'll be ready to try again. I will give it another go tomorrow night. My biggest issue has been getting the unzipped file on to the CD. It's not copying or something. So when I get to the boot step, nothing happens.
I think I still may be missing a step, so I am going to read more.

Thanks for being so patient.

The only other way I know of checking the RAM is to substitute good RAM chips for the old one but that's not a practical option.
Here are more instructions how to run the test.
