SLOW computer after running scans

Post by Celina268 on Fri 24 Oct 2014, 7:42 am

This computer is my Father in Laws. He can't do anything with it unless he's in safe mode. If in normal, it won't open anything without it taking at least 30 minutes to open. I've run Malwarebtes but nothing came up. I am not sure what else to do. I am sure there is a virus somewhere, but I can't find it. He asked me to work on this months ago, and I forgot about it. They are here for a surprise visit tomorrorw and I remembered about you guys. You're my last hope! I am not sure of the specs. It's a Dell Laptop, they run Windows XP. I am not sure of the bit...I can't remember how to check.

Thank you in advance!

Re: SLOW computer after running scans

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Please click on the OK button to allow AdwCleaner reboot your computer.A log will be produced. Please copy and paste this log in your next reply.

In safe mode. Nothing opens in normal mode....well, IF IF IF it does....it opens after 30 minutes or more of waiting but then you can't do anything with it. All scan are being done in safe mode as well.

Here is the AdwCleaner Log:

DUMB ME! UGH! I thought I saved it on the friggen desktop....but it's not there. I am SO sorry. I'll run the rest of the scans now and I'll be more careful. For what it's worth, there were some files, and some internet things...nothing that looked terrible.

Malwarebytes Anti Root-kit said there were no threats found, so I was unable to get a log.

Also, I should note that it's taking slightly longer than normal for the computer to respond in safe mode than it has been. It's taking a few minutes to load pages and a few more seconds before something actually is useable.

Can you determine if there was any changes made to the computer prior to this event? Any new hardware/software installed? Can you get access to System Restore in Safe Mode? Do you have the XP disk?

I am not sure. I know he just uses it to surf the internet and put pictures on. He is been adamant about not restoring to factory because he doesn't want to lose his pictures. I tried putting the pictures on a CD, but it is too slow and doesn't do anything. I haven't tried, but I am sure I can access the system restore in safe mode.

Ok, try System Restore and tell me what the earliest restore date is. Also, what happens when you press F8 to get into Safe Mode? Do you get other options like "last known good configuration"?

Ok. I do get an option of last known good configuration. Also, the earliest restore date was March 6, 2014. That was the restore date I made when I first brought the computer back here and forgot about it, so I know he had issue before.

It helped, as in, it opened IE, and other programs less slowly. It took 8 minutes to open IE. I could try to run scans now. Whew! This is painfully slow! I did take ALL morning and back up their pictures on my external hard drive so if we need to just complete system restore, ok. This is awful,

After a restart, things are a little better. I am able to move around and programs do open. I used the 'last known good configuration'. Right now, I amin normal mode. Things are taking a bit to open, load, but it's not FOREVER like before....more like 20 years ago and dial-up. I bet if we cleaned some stupid programs up it would run even better. I am afraid to do anything on my own because I don't want to mess anything up now...we've gotten this far.

if we need to just complete system restore, ok.
Since you don't have the XP disk I believe System Recovery is out of the question unless you can borrow an XP disk from someone but it must be the exact same version that's on your computer now. Please run MBAM, AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool again to see if anything else is picked up. I need to run this scan to take a close look at your system. Please make sure to post both logs.

Download DDS from HERE or HERE and save it to your desktop.

Vista users right click on dds and select Run as administrator (you will receive a UAC prompt, please allow it)

* XP users Double click on dds to run it.
* If your antivirus or firewall try to block DDS then please allow it to run.
* When finished DDS will open two (2) logs.
* Save both reports to your desktop.
* The instructions here ask you to attach the Attach.txt.

1) DDS.txt
2) Attach.txt
Instead of attaching, please copy/past both logs into your Thread

Note: DDS will instruct you to post the Attach.txt log as an attachment.
Please just post it as you would any other log by copying and pasting it into the reply.

•Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.
After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection.
Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control HERE .Then post your DDS logs. (DDS.txt and Attach.txt )

Just wanted to touch base. I reran Malewarebytes: nothing. I reran Adwcleaner: It found registry keys, I pressed clean, and ever since then all web browsers say: "have encountered an error and need to close". I'll have to try in safe mode after work today. I didn't get a chance to run DDS because I can't get any web browsers to open in normal mode. I'll try again later today.

Reset Hosts File:

* Go to Start > Run and type Notepad.exe then click OK
* Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad:

Code:
@Echo off
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1  localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
del %0

* Go to File > Save As
* Save File name as "Reset.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
* Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.

On the desktop double click the Reset.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed.
