do i need an antivirus program?

Post by christmas_light on Thu Dec 05, 2013 2:12 pm

hi. So, I recently got mywebsearch on my computer, I don't know how or when, but it was just there one morning. I decided to delete it.. but that turned out to be rather hard. So, I searched in google and there were like many, many suggestions and i followed this removal guide http://www.xp-vista.com/spyware-removal/mywebsearch-toolbar-removal-guide but it makes me download an antivirus program and i really don't know if it is a good choice and I want some advice.. if I don't see mywebsearch anymore does that mean it's gone. The article says the manual removal is not enough, but I think it's gone, so now do I have to install an antivirus program? If yes, which one? Thanks : ))))

You really should install a AV program. If you don't wish to pay for one, here are some free ones.
Remember to only install one antivirus!

1) Avast! Home Edition
2) AVG Free Edition
3) Avira AntiVir Personal
4) MicroSoft Security Essentials All versions and all languages.
5) Comodo Antivirus (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" if you choose this one)
6) PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

You could try an on-demand scanner, there are plenty that don't require you to install a AV or a resource hogging suite.
I personally use HitMan Pro for my on demand scanning needs it's published by SurfRight which was recently acquired by Sophos.
Zemana also offers a very good on demand scanner.
I personally employ a 100% signature-less security config, weather or not you install a AV should depend on your level of security awareness and surfing habits.
An average PC user should utilize an AV in my opinion. An Advanced PC user with safe browsing habits who is security conscious can get away with employing a lighter security config. Only you know your skill level and base the config you employ off of what you feel comfortable with Smile
Good luck
