Post by pklong on 23rd April 2013, 12:58 am

HI-

Old, old, old desktop it too slow to function. Applications (i.e. web browsers) take 3-5 minutes to open. 10-15 minutes for computer to boot-up completely. Only use for this desktop is word processing and web browsing for my wife. Just wondering if a virus or spyware is present. Here are the logs.

Re: Ancient desktop too slow to function

Post by Superdave on 23rd April 2013, 6:06 pm

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
*****************************************************************
Remove the Adware:

  • Please close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with OK
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

*******************************************
Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your DESKTOP.
If your version of Windows defaults to you download folder you will need to copy it to your desktop.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

To prevent your anti-virus application interfering with ComboFix we need to disable it. See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for a tutorial regarding how to do so if you are unsure.

  • Close any open windows and double click ComboFix.exe to run it.

You will see the following image:

Click I Agree to start the program.

ComboFix will then extract the necessary files and you will see this:

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. This will not occur in Windows Vista and 7

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Re: Ancient desktop too slow to function

Post by Superdave on 24th April 2013, 12:30 am

Internet Explorer's security is based upon a set of zones. Each zone has different security in terms of what scripts and applications can be run from a site that is in that zone. There is a security zone called the Trusted Zone. This zone has the lowest security and allows scripts and applications from sites in this zone to run without your knowledge. It is therefore a popular setting for malware sites to use so that future infections can be easily done on your computer without your knowledge as these sites will be in the Trusted Zone. Therefore, I recommend that nothing be allowed in the trusted zone. If you agree, please do the following.

Re-running ComboFix to remove infections:

  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    KillAll::

    Firefox::
    Trusted Zone: internet
    Trusted Zone: mcafee.com

    DDS::
    Trusted Zone: internet
    Trusted Zone: mcafee.com

  • Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

  • Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
  • I don't need to see the log from this script.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Note: Do not take action against any **Rootkit** entries until I have reviewed the log. Often there are false positives

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Ok. If there are no other issues, we can do some cleanup.

To uninstall ComboFix

  • Click the Start button. Click Run. For Vista: type in Run in the Start search, and click on Run in the results pane.
  • In the field, type in ComboFix /uninstall

(Note: Make sure there's a space between the word ComboFix and the forward-slash.)

  • Then, press Enter, or click OK.
  • This will uninstall ComboFix, delete its folders and files, hides System files and folders, and resets System Restore.

*******************************************
Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
Click Disk Cleanup from there.

Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.

This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)

Thanks so much for your help! I've been away for a while. I performed all your recommendations above. Machine was about 80-90% better but over the past week has slowly returned to almost as slow as before. The only difference in usage was that Hulu.com was accessed and a few videos were watched. Otherwise, I'm not sure what happened?

Is it just slow on the net or generally slow all the time?

Browsing the internet is still fairly good, hit or miss at times but overall MUCH better. However if a browser is left open with multiple tabs overnight, it seems to lock up the machine. The main thing I'm noticing is that the machine is slow all the time compared to initially after completing all of your suggestions. Not expecting light speed due to its age, but something changed recently and I'm not sure what happened.

You should shut down your computer overnight unless you have some specific reason to leave it on. The best thing you can do for your computer is to re-boot it occassionly.

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Note: Do not take action against any **Rootkit** entries until I have reviewed the log. Often there are false positives

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

How much RAM do you have on that computer? Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. You should see the amount of RAM that you have there.

Re: Ancient desktop too slow to function

Well, low and behold, today is the first day I'm having problems browsing the net. First was a script error which froze up the browser for about 2-3 minutes. While trying to access this page, the browser froze with a message in the bottom left hand corner "waiting for ad.doubleclick.net" which kept both the browser and the machine locked up for about 90 seconds. Very odd.

1 GB of RAM

1 GB of RAM
That's quite small to run XP. What is the size of your harddrive and how much free space is left?
Click My Computer, right-click the C drive and select Properties.

I think if you increase the amount of RAM you would see an improvement.
