I finally was able to run Reatogo

Post by kf4nxs on 14th August 2012, 7:45 am

My inlaws computer has a bad boot problem. I have tried boot disk and short of reloading, I TRIED REATOGO. AFTER SEVERAL RESTARTS AND BOSD, i FINALLY GOT rEATOGO to load as it loads from disk. Anything from the drive goes straigt to Blue screen. I took the drive out and hooked it up and was able to see the dir tree structure so the drive is working. I keep getting different blue screen errors, I would like to do a recovery but it will not even go in to safe mode.

Ok I think it may be a bios issue, after letting retogo run for a while I got a blue screen which was refering possible bios corruption. Considering there is no OS on the drive or anything else for that matter. I have pulled the battery, pulled the ram pulled everything but the processor and still have no luck. I have tried boot disks prior to formatting the drive and I have tried re installing the system to no avail. How would I go about checking or uploading a new bios, just to eliminate that possibility.

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
*****************************************************************
The only thing I could suggest is to slave the drive on another computer and run a diagnostic on it.

Run hard drive diagnostics: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I slaved the drive prior to your post and have formatted the drive, I believe i may have a bios issue. I pulled the battery and it went through post then showed no boot segment which there shouldnt be. I then ran reatogo to run some diagnostics, I left it setting all night and sometime during the day it went in to blue screen mentioning new hardware and checking bios. I have pulled the drive restarted shut down pulled memory and swapped memory. I still get a blue screen.

Did that, I was able to read the drive. Thinking there was a virus, ran scan found nothing. My wife tried doing a recovery got half way then crashed. So I formatted the drive. Put it back in and was still getting a bsod. Ran from reatogo disk booted everything came up. let it set over night then got blue screen talking about new hardware and bios error. Not sure how to go about loading a bios update. Thats why Im thinking it is in the bios, with no os installed and running from disk I still got bsod.

Boot your computer with the OS disk in and it should start to load the OS.

BSOD usually means a hardware problem. Can you still boot using the Rescue Disk?

I am able to boot with Reatogo, but after a while it will crash with that. Not sure what the issue is. I may need to take the drive out format it again with another computer and start over. You tell me the best way to start fresh from the beginning.

If it crashes with the Rescue Disk that means it's not the hard drive because the computer if running from the Rescue Disk. It sounds more like a heating problem or mother board problem. You can run a diagnostic on your hard drive while you're booted to the Rescue disk. I believe that I provided the details for that in a previous post.
