LG DVD Player and HP Printer do not work properly after Virus

Post by pointman on Sat Jun 30, 2012 9:48 pm

After correcting a maleware/virus problem (with the help of GeekPolice) on my desktop computer a few months ago my LG DVD player will only play certain DVDs. It will not play audio CD's or run installation CD's or DVD's. I've tried to reinstall the software but that doesn't correct the problem. Also my HP officejet all-in-one usb printer will only "print" now. I can't use the scan or copy functions from my desktop. When I try to reinstall the software it says the cable is not connected but I can print so it must be connected properly. All the printer functions work properly via wireless from my notebook so it is not a printer problem. The computer is running windows XP. I was not sure weather to post this as a software or hardware problem.

It is likely that security settings are disallowing you to run certain devices or programs, mainly because of the malware.

Please navigate to this webpage: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222 and see the section "Fix it for me" and click the Microsoft Fix-It button. This will download a fix utility to repair the security settings on your computer, due to damages of malware or other harmful system changes. Install the file after download.

I did not see a "fix it for me" section on this page. Should I go to the "other Support Sites"..."microsoft fix it solutions" and select one of the fixes there?

Go to Start > Run, type in CMD and hit OK.

Type this in the Command Line and hit enter:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

Should be a confirmation, and then reboot your system. Let me know if this worked.

I cannot tell any difference after running this. DVD player still will not recognize my installation CD's.

Please download the latest version of Kaspersky GetSystemInfo (GSI) from Kaspersky and save it to your Desktop.

Note: please close all other applications running on your system.

Double click GetSystemInfo.exe to open it. It will display an agreement. Click on I Agree to continue.

Click the Settings button.

Set the slider to Maximum.

IMPORTANT! Then, click Customize - choose Driver / Ports tab and uncheck Scan Ports.

On the General tab, make sure all of the boxes are checked.

On the Misc tab, make sure all the checkboxes are checked.

Then, click OK on the windows that you launched.

Click Create Report to run it.

It will begin scanning.

It will create a zip folder called GetSystemInfo_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.zip on your Desktop.

It should automatically upload it to http://www.getsysteminfo.com. If it does not, then please submit it manually by going to the site and doing the upload process.

It will redirect to a page, where it will provide a sharing URL for specialists. Copy and paste the url of the GSI Parser report in your next reply.

I want to check for remnants of malware...

Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe.
  • Click Quick Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • Please post OTL.txt in your reply.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Re: LG DVD Player and HP Printer do not work properly after Virus

OTL Fix

Please run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, copy and paste in the following:

    Code:
    :OTL
    DRV - File not found [Kernel | Unavailable | Unknown] -- globalroot\C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\196415.sys -- (196415)
    IE - HKLM\..\SearchScopes,DefaultScope = {6A1806CD-94D4-4689-BA73-E35EA1EA9990}
    IE - HKCU\..\SearchScopes,DefaultScope = {6A1806CD-94D4-4689-BA73-E35EA1EA9990}

    O7 - HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer: NoDrives = 0

    :commands
    [emptytemp]
    [reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • Note: The fix for OTL automatically hides your Desktop and Start menu so the fix can be completed. Do not be alerted, this is normal.
  • Please do not exit the program. It might take a while to fix, but allow it to run. If it asks to reboot the computer, allow it to reboot. If the program freezes, and the computer fails to reboot - let me know.
Lastly, post the contents of the log. (Located at C:\_OTL\Moved Files)

MS-Tool Diagnostic

Go to this page, and click on the Run now button: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

It will run a diagnostic to tell you why you cannot play media, etc.

The program did freeze and failed to reboot. I did manual reboot. I will wait to hear from you before I run the MS- Tool.

All processes killed

Re: LG DVD Player and HP Printer do not work properly after Virus

Post by pointman on Tue Jul 10, 2012 4:12 pm

Okay, tried the MS fixit tool. It did not detect a problem with the DVD so no fix was applied. The DVD player still does not work. Should I unplug it and uninstall/reinstall?

Try that and see how it goes, please. That would be a good troubleshooting step.

Re: LG DVD Player and HP Printer do not work properly after Virus

Post by pointman on Wed Jul 11, 2012 8:36 pm

from the device mgr. I unstalled the dvd player and then unplugged the dvd ribbon and then rebooted. I then shut down and attached the ribbon back to the dvd and booted back up. Dvd reinstalled automatically. however there was no change in the dvd operation or the printer. not sure what to try next...any ideas?

Are the devices installed in USB? Just the printer?

Or are they all ported to the motherboard directly?

Go Start and then to Run,
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.

If you don't have Windows CD....

Go Start and then Run
type in regedit and click OK

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

On the right hand side, find: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePath setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

After the first run, reboot your computer. Do a second run. Now the scan and fix is finished.

When I run the sfc /scannow I get a message that "files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert Windows XP CD." When I insert my windows XP cd I get the message "cd inserted is the wrong cd; either I have wrong cd or cdrom is not operating properly." (I have the right cd.) I tried checking the sourcepath drive letter and it is already C:

Okay. Since you have to let the fix system look for what's on the CD, please change the sourcepath to whatever drive letter your CD-ROM drive is.

changed source letter from c: to D: and re-ran sfc /scannow. I inserted windows xp cd when prompted and still get the message that I have inserted the wrong cd. I am sure i am inserting the right windows cd. (I only have one.) dvd player will still play a couple of my music video dvds but thats all.

Thanks for that. More questions...

Have you attempted any of this in Safe Mode?

Do you have more than one drive on the computer?

Did you modify any settings in the Registry or BIOS for the drive?

All of the evidence leads to a failing drive. We could continue running fixes till we're blue in the face, but when a drive fails...it's done.

Usually, in this case, if you have LG support repair it, (if not under warranty), you'll pay an arm and a leg to replace the burning mechanism. Same type of stuff I went through, except my issue was more VCR/DVD recorder problem.

Price of new drive: $40-80 USD
Price of mechanism: $60-260 depending on brand popularity
Cost of replacing mechanism (tiresome): $60-200 depending on experience of techie.

As you can see, a new drive is the best option.

I'm sorry it came to this, as I wouldn't recommend you to pay anything unless if necessary.

Let me know what you do.

Ok, that was my thinking also. I will probably just replace it. Thanks for all your help.
