Hello,
Newbie needing help.
I have a Toshiba - Qosmio X305-Q705 laptop.
I don't remember what OS it came with, but it was 64 bit.
I bought an upgrade to Vista Business, and had to change it to 32 bit to use at work.
Well now I want to install a new HDD and I don't think it came with recovery cd's.
I'm trying to figure out how to create my own recovery CD / DVD.
I looked in my start menu and Recovery Disc Creator is not there.
I searched using just Recovery, and the only thing that comes up is for Office.
Any suggestions?

Hello!
Sorry for delay in getting back to you!!
Are you attempting to get a new HDD to install a new operating system on, or just need storage?

I bought a new hard drive.
I want to retire my 4 year old hard drive and install the new one.
Since the last posting, I gave up trying to make my own boot disk.
I went to the Toshiba website and for 30.00 they will send a "recovery" disc.
I hope this is what I need or a fresh install on the new hard drive.
Is it???????
SW Media - DVD-QOSMIO-X305-Win Vista 32/64bit Home Prem-EN for Qosmio X305-Q705

You need the full Windows Operating System disc. You would have to buy a new licensed copy of Windows. Unless the Recovery Disc has the correct OS media on it. Make sure to ask first if it will install the whole operating system. Many times...they will not.

Well crap, I already ordered it.
Originally the laptop came with Vista Home Premium (64 bit) and then I paid extra for an upgrade to Vista Business, and then extra again to convert it to 32 bit so it would communicate to our f*** Cisco phone system! (PITA)
They are sending me the Home Premium Edition.
Since they call it a "recovery" disc I didn't know what to expect, but it seems kinda crappy if you can't replace replace parts in your own computer without having to buy another copy of the OS for 2-3 hundred dollars.

Oh,
I looked in "my computer" and it shows the C drive, and another one that is only about 8 GB's or so. I think that is the space that they had all the recovery stuff on. I don't know why I can't access it and just copy it to DVD like you're supposed to be able to.
Frustrating.

Actually, usually there are hotkeys that you can press at the beginning of boot-time, where it will do automatic recovery process.
What is the make and model of your computer? I will check to see what the hotkeys are...

qosmio X305-Q705 Toshiba.
But, I didn't want to just recover to original. I wanted to install a new hard drive and install the OS.
I get the feeling I wasted my money.

Hmmm,
Read this from the website that I ordered the recovery disk from:
All new Toshiba laptops ship from the factory with the ability to run the system recovery process from a hard disk partition, and with preinstalled software that can be used to record recovery media to blank discs. Toshiba recommends creating recovery media to ensure the ability to run a system recovery even if the hard disk recovery partition is damaged or deleted, or if the hard disk breaks. Reconditioned laptops may not include this recovery enabling software so may require that recovery media be purchased.

Yeah, the recovery options and recovery disc is used to recover the operating system on the current drive.
You need a separate OS license for a new hard drive, unfortunately.
