Windows 7/Atheros AR5B93 Disconnection Issues

Post by Tyrnok on Fri May 04, 2012 5:55 am

Hello everyone, new around here, and haven't had much luck researching this issue because everything that I find seems to not cover the issue I'm having.

I have an Acer Aspire 7740-5691 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit edition, and an Atheros AR5B93 wireless network adapter.

For the last few weeks my computer has been having some issues with staying connected to the internet, and most recently a few days ago booted me 3 times within about 8 hours, an each time I had to hard boot the computer because it froze up during the shut down screen trying to get the adapter to reconnect. Our network is through CenturyLink DSL, we had 4 laptops on wireless for 6+months with no issues before it started randomly booting one or 2 computers from the network.

Now lately the problem has gotten worse. Acer stopped supporting drivers directly for my computer last year (its a 3 year old laptop..) so I had to find the Atheros Windows 7 driver update which I was behind by quite a few on through a secondary 'unofficial' source. Which seems to have helped the problem some, but I'm still getting some random booting.. A friend of mine thinks it could be software issues between Atheros and Win7, but told me just to research it.. Which led me to this forum...

Do any of you know if there have been reported issues with Atheros and Windows 7, is my card just going so bad that a driver update isn't working 100%? Could it be an issue with CenturyLink?

I was having some nasty issues about a month and a half ago that I took care of with an Avast Antivirus boot scan, a defrag and optimization, and spyware/adware/malware scans which got rid of some nasty stuff...

Any help or advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Let's get a look at your system first...this will help identify your system entirely and automatically check for viruses/malware and driver updates!

Please download the latest version of Kaspersky GetSystemInfo (GSI) from Kaspersky and save it to your Desktop.

Note: please close all other applications running on your system.

Double click GetSystemInfo.exe to open it. It will display an agreement. Click on I Agree to continue.

Click the Settings button.

Set the slider to Maximum.

IMPORTANT! Then, click Customize - choose Driver / Ports tab and uncheck Scan Ports.

On the General tab, make sure all of the boxes are checked.

On the Misc tab, make sure all the checkboxes are checked.

Then, click OK on the windows that you launched.

Click Create Report to run it.

It will begin scanning.

It will create a zip folder called GetSystemInfo_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.zip on your Desktop.

It should automatically upload it to http://www.getsysteminfo.com. If it does not, then please submit it manually by going to the site and doing the upload process.

It will redirect to a page, where it will provide a sharing URL for specialists. Copy and paste the url of the GSI Parser report in your next reply.

Why are each of the Adobe websites blocked in the HOSTS file?

Also, it appears two antivirus programs are installed...are you running both or just one of them for now? (Ad-Aware and Avast software)

When I was reading the report, it appears there is not enough driver information...

Did you stop the scan in the middle or before it was finished?

1. No idea on Adobe...Friend of mine installed it on my PC..

2. Uhh Yeah they both run.. friend of mine suggested Adaware for better adware protection, and Avast for better virus protection, does avast do both?

3. Nope, I let it go all the way through, I shut down every thing that I'm aware of except for Avast, do I need to shut it off for the scan as well?.... I'll rerun it after I get out of class..

Yes, Avast does both. So does AdAware. I recommend Avast more.

It just appeared the GSI scan did not run all the way through.

Download and install http://www.majorgeeks.com/DriverView_d4048.html

Once you download it, unzip it, double-click on DriverView.exe.

Click on the View tab, and click "Hide Microsoft drivers".

Click on the View tab again, select "HTML Report - All Items".

It may open it in a browser, if so, (in the browser), select File > Save as...

Once you have saved a copy, please upload it to the forum here for analysis.

I can't open the report from here. That is a file path to your own computer which will only work on your computer.

But, please upload that file to www.mediafire.com and post the download link here.

Have you attempted to go in to Device Manager, right-click on the driver(s) in question and select Update? Usually, it will allow you to automatically check Windows Update...

Yeap! the wireless card was version 8.something and it was saying it was "up to date" but when I was searching online I found a 'unofficial website' that had a version 10.something for my wireless card, so I installed that, and it was running great for awhile, then there was a few days of random disconnects, and now the last 2 days it suddenly hasn't had any issues... <.< Not sure what to think right now...

Let it go for a few more days, then let me know if other issues arise or if it is working well.
