Internet undetected

Post by rns59 on 12th April 2012, 5:01 pm

So yesterday morning I got online to pay bills and got a pop-up asking for permission to access my computer. It said I had granted permission before and I was on a familiar site so I allowed. I immediately got another asking for permission but no "granted permission before" on this one so I blocked it. Within minutes my internet stopped working and hasn't since. I've done several different virus scans, mal-ware bytes, many other free scans and nothing is detected. I brought the netbook (that's what I was using) to my wireless router/modem and tried it directly with the ethernet cable but still no connection. Everything else works...just no internet. Any ideas???

Hello!

It might appear the DNS settings in your router have been reset. You will need to adjust the configuration of your router, so it reads information from the modem correctly.

What type of connection are you running:

DSL, Cable, or other?

DSL...I also have a desktop, laptop and iPhones working from the same router with no issues. Could this still be the problem? Thanks for getting back to me Smile

Okay.

What antivirus were you running (if any)?

I had McAfee but I think the trial had expired. Mal-Ware Bytes was on the netbook and I've since installed Avast but no infections were detected.

Try (completely) removing McAfee and see if the interference dissipates:

Please download and run MCPR.exe

  1. Download the removal tool from: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
  2. Click Save and save the file to a folder on your computer.
  3. Navigate to the folder where the file was saved.
  4. Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
  5. Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.

NOTE: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  6. Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.
Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.

Let me know how the computer operates afterward!
