Computer sluggish and has some wierd add-ons in explorer tool bar

Post by rappcon on 18th February 2012, 9:08 pm

This is my neighbors computer. I suspect her daughter downloaded something. When I logged into her account, the computer was sluggish and I couldn't do certain things like calling "cmd".
I logged into another account to run the virus tools. Thanks for the help!

Re: Computer sluggish and has some wierd add-ons in explorer tool bar

Post by houndmom on 19th February 2012, 5:21 pm

Hello, Welcome to GeekPolice! I am Houndmom and I will be helping you get your computer cleaned up. Right On!

Please note the following information about the malware forum:

    * Only Tech Officers, Global Moderators, Administrators,, Malware Advisors and [color=green}Tech Staff[/color] are allowed to give advice on removing malware from your computer.
    * From this point on, please do not make any more changes to your computer; such as install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc. - unless advised by the staff I noted above.
    * Please do not ask for help elsewhere (in this site or other sites). Doing so can result in system changes, which may not show up in the logs you post.
    * If you have already asked for help somewhere, please post the link to the topic you were helped.
    * We try our best to reply quickly, but for any reason we do not reply in two days, do one of two things:

Reply to this topic with the word BUMP, or
see [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

    * Lastly, keep in mind that we are volunteers, so you do not have to pay for malware removal. Persist in this topic until its close, and your computer is declared clean.

I am a student and need to get each step approved before posting. Thank you for your patience.

I will return in a moment with the first step.

If we have helped you, Please consider helping us,  make a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Re: Computer sluggish and has some wierd add-ons in explorer tool bar

Post by rappcon on 24th February 2012, 3:06 am

Hi Thanks for the response. I had two small issues. I ran the OTL fix script and pasted it into this forum, but lost the information when I ran comboFix. So I ran the OTL script again after comboFix.

ComboFix complained that I had norton 360 running. Not sure why. I believe this computer only has Microsoft Essentials running. I did disable it. Here is the combiFix log:
ComboFix 12-02-22.01 - mom 02/23/2012 7:36.1.1 - x86

Re: Computer sluggish and has some wierd add-ons in explorer tool bar

Post by houndmom on 27th February 2012, 12:30 am

Congratulations!! You are clean.
It is important for the tools we used to be removed. Please do the following to do this:
1.To uninstall ComboFix

  • Click the Start button. Click Run. For Vista: type in Run in the Start search, and click on Run in the results pane.
  • In the field, type in ComboFix /uninstall

(Note: Make sure there's a space between the word ComboFix and the forward-slash.)

  • Then, press Enter, or click OK.
  • This will uninstall ComboFix, delete its folders and files, hides System files and folders, and resets System Restore.

2.To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:
Double click OTL.exe.

  • Click the CleanUp button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

3.Your Adobe is out of date.

Please Uninstall the old version via Start >> Control Panel >> Add Remove Programs
Uninstall Version 9
You can download Adobe Reader X [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

4.Update JAVA
Please Uninstall old versions of Java in Add/Remove Programs.
Version 6 Update26

I would also like to share a few tips with you to prevent infections in the future:

5. Securing your computer[list]
[*][You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
[*][You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. This prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is your local computer's loopback address, meaning it will be difficult to infect your computer in the future.

6. It is Very Important for you to keep your Antivirus Program Updated. This can prevent future infections. When you suspect there may be an infection be sure to run it.
Resident Protection help
A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall, and scanning anti-spyware program at a time.

Rogue programs help
There are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure and looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:
