Windows 7 does not see DVD ROM drive

Post by lscheib on Sat Feb 18, 2012 1:43 pm

I recently upgraded from XP to Win7 (32) and everything worked. However, now Win7 does not see the DVD ROM drive. Device manager says device cannot start, but has the latest driver. DVD ROM is ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L ATA device. I can boot from CD though at startup if I choose to do so without any issues, so the drive does work.

Read this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

There's a section for W7.

This webpage only says to run the device troubleshooter for Windows 7. I have already done that. It did not find or correct the issue.

I was hoping that would help. I've seen this before on XP machines. You have to go in and remove the filters. Seems W7 is different.

You know the drive is working. The problem pops its ugly head when the Windows drivers kick in.

You could try booting in Safe Mode. If the drive works in Safe Mode, you can use msconfig to turn off startup items in hopes of finding whatever it is that's causing the problem.

This webpage had me delete the upper and lower filters from a specific registry key. I did not have the lower filter. I also had some items in my startup from a software package that failed to fully install. I disabled those from startup. I'm not sure which was the right answer, but either way, my drive is back! Thank you!

Something in startup. If you find out what way the cause, let me know.
