Problem installing vista sp2 so trend micro can renew.

Post by smayracing92 on Tue 06 Dec 2011, 12:17 pm

Hello,
I'm having problems with my Toshiba laptop sporting Vista, Trend Micro Internet Security, normally using Firefox or Chrome and 2g of ram. I am renewing my Trend Micro Security and was doing the install when I got an error "installation Stopped" saying to use this software, I need to have the latest service pack for my operating system. For some reason I am not able to install all updates for windows. I just did some today and was successful for four of them but 1 failed. I also saw today that I have a huge list of problems on my monthly trend micro security report. I must have some kind of software issue that I cannot find or resolve and neither can the anti-virus/anti-spyware. The computer has been shutting off for no reason from time to time with no warning, for some time now. the best way to guarantee this will happen is to run the mem-test or run a Trend Micro scan in safe mode and it will shut down for sure. it usually shuts down at the worst time possible like the last few seconds of burning a cd. but sometimes will go a few days without shutting down at all. I have also been getting the blue screen of death intermittently, although it hasn't sent me to the screen recommending repairs for a long time. So i guess the best place to start would be to get the sp2 to install correctly and go from there? Any ideas on how to make that happen? Please help!!!

Thanks!!!

Bryan

And i just realized...

Post by smayracing92 on Wed 07 Dec 2011, 5:52 am

And I just realized that i have been running with two firewalls and apparently 2 anti spyware programs. so i just disabled the factory installed windows firewall and windows defender. could this be why my updates are not downloading correctly or why i'm having other problems like the random shut-downs?

My Windows Security Center settings are now at:
Firewall: Not Monitored
Automatic Updating: On
Malware Protection Check settings
virus protection Not Monitored
Spyware and other Malware On
Trend Micro Internet Security reports that it is turned on ON

Does this sound all good?

yeah? do you think it's a malware issue? i wasn't sure i thought maybe just a bad windows file for whatever reason. what about the shutting down issue? do you think it's related or possibly also a malware issue? i was planning on calling microsoft tomorrow to see if they could help me sort through the install error issue since i hadn't heard anything here yet. i'll re-post over there tomorrow after i make a call so i can get all the info together. thanks.

You could post in the malware section just to be sure the problem is not malware related, As a GP student I am not permitted to help you with that but take a look at THIS for help with Windows Updates

thanks for the link but i tried mr fixit a couple of days ago and it would not install the "powershell" component so it could run properly. maybe the same reason the sp2 will not install??? oh well... to be continued... lol

thx!
