AVG 2011

Post by chips on Tue 15 Nov 2011, 2:19 pm

Okay, so I have the paid version of AVG 2011 and everything has been working alright until up to a week or so ago. I was having issues with the laptop freezing up and other miscellaneous issues. I just figured it needed a little clean up and possibly had a corrupt program so it allowed me to do the updates to the AVG 2011 and updated it to AVG 2012 with the new virus definitions. When I ran the program it came up with nothing so I thought great, must just be a corrupt file or something. Then I went ahead and tried to open Microsoft Word to work on a document I need to get done...that's when I knew something else was going on. It brought up macro errors. With Publisher everything was in another language and was scribbly...something is really wrong. So I did a system restore to a week ago and now I can open Word and Publisher no problem but I have no virus program that will work. It will not allow me to download Malwarebytes - says its a virus - but I don't have a virus program on so how can that be. So obviously I have a virus shutting my stuff down...Please help!

Hi there chips!

I am Gabethebabe and I will be helping you with this issue. Before we start some general remarks/rules:
  • Whilst I´m helping you, please follow my instructions carefully and do not experiment on your own or accept help from other persons.
  • Feel free to ask questions! Especially if my instructions are not clear. I´m here to help, not confuse you.
  • I will try and respond quickly, but please understand I do have a real life (job, wife, 3 kids, kinky hobbies).
  • Stick with me till the end. If your computer starts running better, doesn´t mean it is clean yet!

====================

Please download OTL by OldTimer from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe.
  • The Extra Registry setting should be Use Safelist
  • Copy and paste the following text into the Custom Scans/Fixes box:

Code:
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\*.*
%systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile\*.dat /x
%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\*.exe
%PROGRAMFILES%\Common Files\*.*
%systemroot%\winn32\*.*
%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\*.exe
%USERPROFILE%\*.exe
%PROGRAMFILES%\Mozilla Firefox\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\TinyProxy.
%systemroot%\system32\*.* /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.* /lockedfiles
%PROGRAMFILES%\*.

/md5start
netlogon.dll
iaStor.sys
nvstor.sys
atapi.sys
IdeChnDr.sys
viasraid.sys
AGP440.sys
disk.sys
explorer.exe
userinit.exe
winlogon.exe

hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
  • Click the Run Scan button and allow it to run.
  • It will produce two logs for you, OTL.txt and Extras.txt. Please post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need multiple posts to get it all.

====================

Please download aswMBR by Alwil Software from here and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click aswMBR.exe to run the tool
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan
  • Don´t panic if you see any **Rootkit** entries. The tool sometimes produces false alarms
  • Once the scan finishes click Save log to save the log to your desktop
  • Copy and paste the contents of this log (aswMBR.txt) into your next reply.

Hello, I tried to download this program but what comes up is a warning...OTL.exe contained a virus and was deleted. I will attempt to get it from another computer but I'm not sure if it will let me run it even if I'm able to download it.

I also tried downloading the Alwil Software with the same results...whatever this is will allow me to go online, will allow me to work with my documents within my computer but will not allow me to do much else.

OK, so it looks like your computer is in the grip of rogueware that blocks all attempts at running stuff. We have just the tool to combat that:

Please download RKill by Grinler from Download Mirror #1 and save it to your desktop.
Download Mirror #1 (rkill.exe)
Download Mirror #2 (rkill.scr)
Download Mirror #3 (rkill.com)
Download Mirror #4 (WiNlOgOn.exe)
Download Mirror #5 (uSeRiNiT.exe)
Download Mirror #6 (iExplore.exe)
Download Mirror #7 (eXplorer.exe)

  • Double click the RKill desktop icon (rightclick > Run as Administrator for Vista/WIN7).
  • A black screen will briefly flash indicating a successful run.
  • If this does not occur please delete that application and try using Mirror #2
  • Continue process until the tool runs.
  • Important: RKill only temporarily disables the malware. If you reboot the computer, it will be active again. So do not reboot until we kill the infection.

====================

If necessary, download a couple of versions of RKill from a clean computer and move to the infected computer with a USB stick.

After RKill did its job, proceed with the OTL and aswMBR steps that I posted earlier.

OK - I am surprised by your logs as I could not find any active malware .
First lets clean up some minor things before investigating further.

====================

  • Please run OTL.exe again
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, copy and paste in the following:

Code:

  • CAREFUL NOW! You must click the Run Fix button, NOT the Run Scan!
  • If it asks to reboot the computer, please allow that.
  • Finally, post the contents of the log. (Located at C:\_OTL\Moved Files)

====================

I have a number of questions now, to see if I can figure out what is happening and why I cannot find anything.

When you tried to install Malwarebytes, or Alwil Avast! or when you tried to run OTL the first time, you stated that a virus alert would pop up. Which program produced that virus alert? Was it AVG or did it have another name?

Before running RKill, you could not run OTL, but after running RKill, you were able to run OTL, is that correct?

====================

Now that it appears that you have control over your computer, could you download&run malwarebytes according to the instructions below?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)

Re: AVG 2011

When you tried to install Malwarebytes, or Alwil Avast! or when you tried to run OTL the first time, you stated that a virus alert would pop up. Which program produced that virus alert? Was it AVG or did it have another name?

It was popping up along the bottom of the internet explorer page...not sure what virus program it was. I have AVG installed as you can see but the computer comes with a basic program as well so not sure which one it was. When it popped up the alert it was all ready and it wouldn't allow for anything to be downloaded...it just deleted the file.

Yes and after I downloaded and ran RKill which it wouldn't allow me to download directly (I had to go get it from the other computer) then it allowed me to download OTL but in all fairness I downloaded that from the other computer too...I'm about to attempt to download directly to this computer for Malwarebytes and see if it allows it...otherwise I will use my handy USB stick and bring it over that way.

I haven't looked at my AVG since we started this process to see if it will allow me to open it yet because I didn't want to change anything until you had helped me work through it but that wasn't working either. Did you want me to see if I can open it yet? I hope I've answered the questions you needed. Thanks again for helping me...I can't understand why there is nothing showing in the logs because it sure was not acting correctly....kept freezing, and kicking me out or not allowing my virus program to work and so on....at one point I did a system restore thinking it was a corrupt file because I could not open my Word document that I need to work on---it just kept pulling up a macro warning and when I went to clear it it would pop up again. When I went into publisher it was scrambled too.

Okay I am trying to figure out which program is generating the virus warning and it is not clear....however, malwarebytes was not allowed to download as it contains a virus according to my warning...it doesn't give me an option...it just straight up deletes it.

Ohhhhh I think its a microsoft thing...maybe this is just a setting issue...I certainly didn't set this. If it is that, how do I change it?

Can you post a screenshot?

You will need to upload it to some image hosting site like photobucket to be able to link to it on this forum.

Re: AVG 2011

Post by chips on Thu 17 Nov 2011, 2:47 am

Okay, so according to Malwarbytes there is no infected items either...also, now I am able to repair my AVG virus program (it wouldn't let me open anything before and now its working). So I don't know what happened but its starting to work again. My next question to you, I still cannot download anything you have sent me on this computer...I have to download it onto the other computer and bring it over on a USB stick. I truly believe it has something to do with the Internet Explorer 9...something in there is blocking downloads....Im just not savvy enough to know what to turn off or fix....if this is the only issue I have it shouldn't be a hard one to fix.

Oh, and one last thing. My computer did freeze up when I was running Malwarebytes the first time through. I have been having this problem the last couple weeks. Could it be a program conflict?

Thank you so much for your patience with me...it is greatly apprecited

So, I went to take a picture of what I was receiving and low and behold the file downloaded without having a meltdown...I don't know why because up until this point I could not download anything but since I've run Malwarebytes I have been able to fix AVG and download directly to this laptop every file I want...it is still doing a scan of the files but it has no trouble bringing them in. I feel like I'm losing my mind...wth? Why would it all of a sudden fix?

My computer is still freezing up for no reason...I think its only happening when I'm on the internet but that seems to be all I've been doing lately so not sure if it wouldn't freeze up if I was doing other things on the computer. What could cause that? Hard rebooting all the time can't be good for the computer.

Have you tried completely uninstalling AVG and installing another antivirus?

I´m not a big fan of AVG. If you want to give this a try, you can uninstall AVG the best using Revo uninstaller

Download and install Revo Uninstaller from here.

  • Run Revo Uninstaller
  • Find AVG, click it and click the Uninstall button
  • When prompted for an uninstall mode choose Advanced
  • Follow the prompts to uninstall the program and related registry entries

After that try Avast! antivirus or Panda Cloud. They are my two free favorites

Hello Gabethebabe:

So you think the reason my computer is freezing up is due to AVG? The issue I have with removing it and loading a new program is that I've paid for this darn program. So now I have to pay for a new program? Before I go ahead and do that I need a bit more of an explanation. I know I'm being a pain in the a** but I have to justify why I'm removing it with more of an explanation. Thanks so much

Don´t worry, we uninstall AVG just for a moment to verify that it is not the source of your problems. If it is not, you can quickly reinstall it.

If your problems are because of AVG, well, it is a damn shame you paid for it, but if it doesn´t work properly, better not run it.

The Antivirus that I suggest you install are free, so no spending of extra money.

Panda Cloud Antivirus
Avast!

Okay, well if I have to get rid of it no problem...I just was curious as to why and that makes perfect sense to me I will uninstall and install one of the other recommended virus programs So far the computer has been running fabulously but did freeze once...I was on my game for a change and I noticed when it did freeze it was when I got an error message with my wireless network connection....I have been having a ton of trouble with my provider...they keep telling me that nothing is wrong with my connection but yet I don't always have full bars....and I've added an extra router so that it should cover a large house (my house is small). I don't know if I have a configuration issue on my part or an issue on their part because I've had shotty service for quite some time anyway...grrrr. If I didn't live in such a remote location and I had more choices I would drop them. Anyway, blah blah blah....sorry, I'm a chatter....so I'll drop AVG and I believe we installed Avast! already didn't we? I haven't removed any of the programs that were installed at the beginning of this journey as of yet...should I? Looking forward to speaking again....
