theinternetsurvey.org

Post by Tang on Wed 21 Sep 2011, 12:22 pm

Every now and then I'll miss-type an address to a site and I'll get redirected to this site (theinternetsurvey.org). It's really only happened with two sites (deviantart.com and youtube.com). Is there something on my computer causing this or is it something online that's just using miss-types as a way to get you to go to these sites. My WOT on firefox rates these are unreliable and dangerous sites. It warns me but every time I try to exit out of the page javascript pops up asking me if I really want to leave (annoying). So yeah, just wondering if it's something on my computer that needs taken care of or what.

Just so you know, for reference, I'm running Windows 7, Home Premium Edition.
HP Pavilion dv5 Notebook PC
I use firefox 3.6 as a browser and nothing else.

I'll be heading to bed soon so I probably won't be able to reply any tonight.

Hello.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

@RealBelahzur - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - Please PM me if I fail to respond within 24hrs.

Oh, I also noticed today the activity of this happening has increased. But I also see that it's doing it when I use a search engine (which I've used a lot today so maybe that's why it's increased?). And "morsearch.com" is showing up as well.

Also, this has been showing up since yesterday (or the day before...can't remember) and I am NOT trying to download anything.

Sorry I keep adding things on to this problem. x.o;

Hello.

Please download ComboFix from BleepingComputer.com

Alternate link: GeeksToGo.com

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found here
  • Click Start then copy paste the following command into the search box & hit enter: "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. This will not install in Vista. Just continue scanning, and skip the console install.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

The only thing that is shown in the log file is this;

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner64.ocx - registred OK
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK

There were threats found (23 to be exact). I still have the window open and I saved a list of the found threats if you need that.

Hello.
Yup, downloaded infected music files, he needs to be careful what he downloads. Okay, just ned to update some old programs now.

  • Click Start >> Control Panel.
  • Under the Programs click Uninstall a Program
  • Highlight the following:

    Adobe Reader 9.3 MUI
    Java(TM) 6 Update 20

  • Click on the Uninstall/Change button at the top.

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 7.
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7-windows-i586.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

Please download Firefox 7.0 and install it. It will install over version 3.6.22 you currently have installed, so you won't lose any bookmarked websites.

Then download and install Adobe Reader X

How is the machine running now?

Please read the following information that I have provided, which will help you prevent malicious software in the future. Please keep in mind, malware is a continuous danger on the Internet. It is highly important to stay safe while browsing, to prevent re-infection.

Software recommendations

AntiSpyware

  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster is a program that prevents spyware from installing on your computer. A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster may be found here.
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy.
Spybot - Search & Destroy is a spyware and adware removal program. It also has realtime protection, TeaTimer to help safeguard your computer against spyware. (The link for Spybot - Search & Destroy contains a tutorial that will help you download, install, and begin using Spybot).

NOTE: Please keep ALL of these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems.

Resident Protection help
A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall, and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors such as SpywareBlaster can be run with any of them.

Rogue programs help
There are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure and looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Securing your computer

  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • hpHosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. This prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is your local computer's loopback address, meaning it will be difficult to infect your computer in the future.

Please consider using an alternate browser
Mozilla's Firefox browser is a very good alternative. In addition to being generally more secure than Internet Explorer, it has a very good built-in popup blocker and add-ons, like NoScript, can make it even more secure. Opera is another good option.

If you are interested:

  • Firefox may be downloaded from here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Opera is available here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Google Chrome is available here: Google Chrome
  • SRWare Iron is available here: SRWare Iron
