Vista Home Security Rogue Software

Post by errantvol on Fri 03 Jun 2011, 2:24 am

GP,
It seems my laptop is infected with some kind of rogue software/virus/malware which mimics Microsoft Windows Security center. As soon as my desktop appears, a screen that looks like Windows Security center appears saying my firewall and malware proctection are turned off. When i click to turn it on it says i need to "Purchase Full Version". I ran Malwarebytes and it stoped the fake Security Center popups however, my desktop wouldnt load properly nor would antivirus software launch. When i would click on any desktop shortcuts, it would say the app wasnt found or it would ask me to choose a program to open an .exe. I went back into malwarebytes and restored the removed registry entries and trojans and now im back to where i started. Please help!!

Scan for malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Download.CNET.com.
Alternate link: BleepingComputer.com.
(Note: if you already have the program installed, just follow the directions. No need to re-download or re-install!)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

(Note: if you already have the program installed, open Malwarebytes from the Start Menu or Desktop shortcut, click the Update tab, and click Check for Updates, before doing the scan as instructed below!)

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If you are prompted to restart, please allow it to restart your computer. Failure to do this, will cause the infection to still be active on the computer.
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • The log can also be found at C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

You mentioned svchost.exe? I've seen that a lot but I thought it was part of windows and vital to it running? What do you mean by 100%?

Your CPU usage in Task Manager may be 100%, if so, then we would diagnose it.

Something I have noticed after finishing all the trouble shooting is that all the files in My documents, my pictures and my music folders seem to missing. The folders all just say empty. I wasnt sure why they would have been deleted and if there might be a way to restore them. Is it possible that malware scanners would have identified them as malicious? Thanks

Where did you get the music from? If it was from an non-certified source, then it could have been malicious.

It does not appear in your logs that the scanners we used deleted important files.

Ok it turned out to be an easy, yet somewhat confusing fix. None of the music files were non-certified but for some reason the properties on all my personal folders had been automatically changed to hidden files. They were all still there in their entirety, I just had to change the property attributes to non-hidden. Ok last question...its not a major deal but I've noticed none of my recently accessed programs appear in the start menu in the recent programs area. Just curious if you may have any idea why, or know an easy fix for it. Thanks again for your time and assistance!

Let's see if we can re-enable it...

Please open Notepad and enter in the following:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoInstrumentation"=0
"NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList"=0

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoInstrumentation"=0
"NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList"=0
Then, click File > Save as...
Save as start.reg to your Desktop.
Choose Save as type... All Files.
Click Save.

Then, exit Notepad.

Double-click on start.reg, and confirm/answer yes for prompts.

Reboot your computer.

Afterward, run a few programs, and then tell me if they re-appear in your Start Menu list.

Let's see if DragonFix will help...

Please download DragonFix by DragonMaster Jay, and save it to your Desktop. Right click and Extract All, and save the files to your Desktop.
  • Please disable realtime protection. The only realtime protection that gets in the way and need to be disabled: Windows Defender, Microsoft Security Essentials, Spybot TeaTimer, WinPatrol, and Ad-Aware AdWatch. If you have anyone of those, please disable them.
  • Double-click DragonFix.reg, and follow the prompt(s).
  • Please reboot your computer.

DragonFix restored all my desktop icons that had been missing since we started, so that's pretty cool. Now at my windows login screen the user name and logo is no longer present. Instead i have to manually type it in...no big deal just different. As far as the programs in the start menu still nothing yet.

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

2. On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

3. On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to, as shown below, and then click Next.

4. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, and then close any open programs.

5. Click Next if you are ready to proceed or click Back to change the restore point.

6. The computer will shut down automatically and reboot. On reboot, you'll see the Restoration Complete page, and then click OK.
After reviewing the stability of your system, you can choose another restore point or undo this restoration. Just open System Restore and make the appropriate choice. After you use System Restore, you'll have an additional task, Undo my last restoration, on the System Restore Welcome page. Remember that you'll have to reinstall any programs that were installed after the restore point.

If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode. To use System Restore in Safe Mode, press the F8 key during reboot and choose Safe Mode. When your computer starts in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used to capture a working previous state. System Restore can't be opened unless the system is bootable into one of these modes.
