Network Connection Poor

Post by msteinbach on 19th May 2011, 2:21 pm

We are using Verizon DSL. The desktop is plugged into the modem. My laptop signal strength is 2 to 3 bars. If I disconnect and view available networks our network appears with 5 bars - total strength - but when I connect to it it drops down to 2. Why won't it stay at 5?

Interesting post. I believe the signal strength meter is not really an indication of the RF signal level, but rather a measure of the digital bit error rate. Maybe without actually actually being connected the bit error rate changes from when it is connected. Just a hunch.

What is the model of the Verizon modem? Is it a G or N class wireless device?

It might make sense for you to get a "third party" wireless router and put it between your Verizon modem and your home network. In that way you can get a better wireless connection because you know what you're getting.
