Trojan horse Agent _r.XJ

Post by Bryonmoe@aol.com on Tue 17 May 2011, 3:48 pm

My computer is infected with Trojan horse Agent_r.XJ. Per AVG some of the files I have that are resulting in "inaccessible" are:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wuauclt.exe(1944)
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe(1284)
C:\WINDOWS\csrss.exe(840):\memo
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe(1240)\memory_001

I'm also getting a message that pops up sometimes that says Winhost server has encountered a problem and needs to close. There may be more files that are infected since my last AVG scan. Also, I'm currently using Safe Mode since the last time I booted up normally I could not get on line using Windows Internet Explorer and the screen went Blue with a message that said "Hardware Error". So I'm worried that my problem is deepening.

I have run the OTL and aswMBR scans as suggested but I encountered problems running the OTL. Initially the first time I ran the scan I realized my Internet Explorer window with your instructions was still open but I could not get the Coding to copy into the Custom Scan/Fix box. When I ran the scan the first time I got an Extras Log.

At this point I closed Internet Explorer and ran the OTL scan again. Still the coding would not copy to the Custom Scan Box. Also... I got no Extras Log this time. I tried a third time with the same result and the OTL log is below along with the aswMBR log. Since I am not all that tech savy I'm not sure if the OTL log will be helpful enough without the custom coding.

I appreciate any help you can offer and I thank you in advance for your help!

How to fix TDL4

Re-run aswMBR.exe
  • Click [Scan]
  • On completion of the scan
  • Click the [Fix] for TDL4 (MBRoot):

Once you are done with that, please do the following:

Please download TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool
  • Click the Start Scan button
  • After the scan has finished, click the Close button
  • Click the Report button and copy/paste the contents of it into your next reply
Note:It will also create a log in the C:\ directory.

DragonMaster Jay,
Thank you for your fast response and the help! I reran aswMBR and did the fix. Scanned on TDSSKILLER and the log follows. The report or the result shows no infection. Does this mean all is well? ( I haven't run AVG scan again). Also, is it advisable to continue using AVG since I acquired the Trojan while using it or is there another more efficient virus software recommended?

Hiya! Your logs appear to be clean. If there are no more issues, then we shall clean up!

Clean up System Restore

Now, to get you off to a clean start, we will be creating a new Restore Point, then clearing the old ones to make sure you do not get reinfected, in case you need to "restore back."
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Run OTC to remove our tools

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created, please do the following:
Please download OTC.exe by OldTimer:
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

Purge old temporary files

Please download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start
button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp
files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute
or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Security Check

Please download Security Check by screen317 from SpywareInfoforum.org or Changelog.fr.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Tell me in your next reply, if you have completed these tasks:
  • Cleaned System Restore
  • Ran OTC
  • Ran TFC
  • Ran Security Check

Also, let me know how your computer is running, and don't forget to post the contents of the Security Check log.

Adobe Reader Update!

Please download the newest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe.com

Before installing: it is important to remove older versions of Acrobat Reader since it does not do so automatically and old versions still leave you vulnerable.
Go to the Control Panel and enter Add or Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Vista/7).
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Uninstall/Remove each of them.

Once old versions are gone, please install the newest version.

Java Update!

Please download the newest version of Java from Java.com.

Before installing: it is important to remove older versions of Java since it does not do so automatically and old versions still leave you vulnerable.
Go to the Control Panel and enter Add or Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Vista/7).
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment). Please uninstall/remove each of them.

Once old versions are gone, please install the newest version.

Hi again! I have not been able to timewise, remove and replace the Adobe Acrobat and the Java yet. Hope to be able to sit at my computer to do so tonight, but I'm having an issue.... Sunday, I downloaded 600- 700 pictures using the Nikon Transfer software that was on my computer. When it was finished downloading I got a message saying Low Disk Space/Zero Disk Space. I did a Disk Clean Up again and managed to be able to get on line to get you this message, but the computer is running extremely slow.

Also, I still have TDC and the Security Check software on my desktop. How do I remove these? Thank you!!!

Could not download the Combo-Fix because of lack of disk space? I rebooted my computer and it came up with a totally different Windows screen/icons and now I can't find many programs and/or any of my pictures from the last year. One of the programs I used was for my work; doing commercial billing for a law firm which I now desperately need. STILL have the TDC and Security Check programs though!!! Also, while I see the AVG icon, there are now no regular scans that I can see being done on my computer. It's like the computer has been hi-jacked! Don't have ANY idea where to begin!!!!

I'm assuming I can do a system restore to the "clean" point we created but will I then lose ANY chance of getting back the 600- 700 pictures I downloaded & erased from my camera on May 22nd (and the ones for the last year in addition) if I don't restore to the proper day AND time???

Please help.

Most of the time for System Restore, your files are not touched. Only Windows settings and program installs are changed back to their previous state.

Okay, so would you recommend the system restore then? My Windows settings have already been changed back. Please let me know what you would advise. Thank you for your continued help!
