Unable To Boot From Hard Drive

Post by Sir $wat on Sun May 15, 2011 4:54 pm

Hey, i have a system that's unable to boot from the harddrive. I know the hard drive is good cuz it's bootin on another pc.

When i try to start up on the other pc... the screen shows a dash (-) that's blinking and nothing happens.

What can be the problem?

Sounds like a mere boot priority issue... is there the option to show a boot list on startup (to load from a cd or floppy, HDD orr USB, that sort of thing (it is usually f12 i think...))

maybe but it could also be the MBR... (Master Boot Record) but i also don't know what i am talking about sometimes but this happened to me once (i now use a new boot manager thing... plop boot manager it allows to boot from USB even on machines that don't support USB boot XD)

You said the hard drive is set to Master. Most newer machines come with Cable Select cables. The IDE connectors are usually marked Master and Slave or they are different colors.

If you've been messing around with hard drives and jumpers, I suggest you change the jumper from Master to Cable Select (CS).

You mentioned in post 5 that it was set to Master. Move the jumper from Master to CS.

Then again, you said that it was working properly when you shut down. So if you didn't make any changes, it's probably not the jumper.

Does the drive show up in the BIOS (Setup) page?

If the drive shows up, then the jumper is in the right position.

If the drive boots another computer then it should be good.

If the BIOS is seeing the drive AND the drive is good then it should boot.

Something else is going on here. If you have other hard drives, CD drives or USB drives, disconnect them all.

Has the computer ever worked properly? If so, did you do anything that may have caused it to stop booting?

Since it's not booting at all. I'd disconnect everything I could: modems, network cards, USB devices, etc. See if it boots.

You can even remove the RAM and see if the thing beeps at you.

Hey guy, have you ever fixed your hard drive problem?I'm wondering what's going on.Would you tell me?
And you may need to get all your data back from your hard drive.I know how to do so. Hooray!
Remove your hard drive and install it into another computer as a slave. Then you can run a data recovery tool for data retrieval.I have succeed with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drive crash. You can download a trial version of it and scan your hard drive for free to check out whether all your files can be recovered.http://www.any-data-recovery.com
