Removed Windows Recovery Virus - Dealing with After Effects (Please Help)

Post by kingkongbundy23 on Mon Mar 28, 2011 4:54 pm

So a few days ago I got the dreaded Windows Recovery Virus. I am running Windows XP: Home Edition on an eMachine. And I was able to finally get rid of it using Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware. I am currently using Avast Pro. 4.8 so I was suprised it got through in the first place but none the less it did. Now I've ran Malware Bytes & SuperAntiSpyware 3 times and finally I have found no threats after several scans and restarts.

Here are my issues -

1)Internet Explorer works fine for me but whenever I click to go onto FireFox my screen goes black for a second and then everything gets huge as if I zoomed in and it looks like it's in safe mode or something to that effect. In explorer it doesn't do it though but it may be because Avast has a script blocker on Explorer but that script blocker isn't compatible with FireFox. It looks like it's in Safe Mode but mutiplied by 10 to the point you can't even see half the screen from being zoomed in but as soon as FireFox is closed everything is fine. I think I have some type of malicious script in FireFox because I have scanned my comp several times after I got rid of Windows Recover and found nothing

2) Also my CD/DVD Burner Drive [which is an LG brand HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H54L] will no longer burn anything, I try burning to back up files, try to burn CD's, movies, etc. it says Failed within seconds without even initiating the burn and it gives me this error message [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Hi,

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to your Desktop. (If you already have it downloaded, then just follow the instructions below).
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\*.exe /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) and paste (Edit->Paste) the contents of these files, one at a time

Note: in the event that OTL fails to run, please use alternate download links to try again:

I was able to get Firefox running normally earlier today by uninstalling it and then reinstalling it but it still redirects me when I search in google for drivers etc. I am running the OTL anyway to see if that will help give you any indication as to what may be wrong with the redirecting of websites & the burner and if there is anything else I may need to do to get my comp back to normal. Thanks so much for you help

  • Return to OTL.exe, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) and choose Paste.

  • Click the red Run Fix button.
  • A fix log in Notepad will appear. Copy the contents of the fix log to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTL.exe

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

-----------------------------------------------

Please download ComboFix from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I'm livin' life in the fast lane.

Hi,

There is a dangerous backdoor trojan on your system. This is a sign of total system compromise.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] are very dangerous because they compromise system integrity by making changes that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes. Remote attackers use backdoors as a means of accessing and taking control of a computer that bypasses security mechanisms. This type of exploit allows them to steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which is send back to the hacker. To learn more about these types of infections, you can refer to:
I would counsel you to immediately disconnect this PC from the Internet and from your network if it is on a network. Disconnect the infected computer until the computer can be cleaned.
Then, access this information from a non-compromised computer to follow the steps needed.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable. Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. (If using a router, you need to reset it with a strong logon/password so the malware cannot gain control before connecting again.) Banking and credit card institutions should be notified to apprise them of your situation (possible security breach). To protect your information that may have been compromised, I recommend reading these references:

Should you have any questions, please ask and I will be happy to answer them.

Please run a free online scan with the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

I usually don't handle my financial info on this comp but I changed my passwords from another device anyway, this is pretty scary though. My system still boots up really slow and I get lag when I play a music or video file, like it is skipping but Malware bytes or SuperAntispyware have found nothing after several scans. If I did a full system restore would that fix the problem on this PC? And would it resolve the backdoor issue?

My computer is running fine, I restored windows instead of a full restore, because my comp was still booting up very slow. Now everything booths up fast and is fine except my burner is still burning really slow. When I try burning a disc, it initializes but it says it will take up 50 mins to burn one disc and this is on 12x speed (out of 16x) and I never used to have that issue til this virus...anything I can do to fix my burner speed?

Hi,

I have one hunch.

Please download TDSSKiller from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool
  • Click the Start Scan button
  • After the scan has finished, click the Close button
  • Click the Report button and copy/paste the contents of it into your next reply
Note:It will also create a log in the C:\ directory.
