Antivira removed... yet still infected?

Post by not_dark_yet on Sat 26 Feb 2011, 5:45 am

I was one of the, seemingly, many people recently caught out with a P2P download of AntiVira AV - lesson learned.

Spent three fruitless hours with my iPhone trying to get rid of it until I got too tired and retired to bed. When I awoke the next morning my up-to-date free version of AVG (the only anti-virus, spyware & malware detector I had installed at the time) notified me that during the night it had found it and wanted to get rid of it. Job done, so I thought.

After a chat with a college pal I decided to tighten up my laptop's security; logged on to GeekPolice and set about downloading Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Kaspersky Free Trial and the Online Armour firewall. After deleting AVG I then restarted the computer. All the new components had installed without any glitches but the computer was running crushingly slow. I put it down to overwork or something and left it alone for a day.

When I went to log on today; however, I'm met with an Explorer.EXE error (The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.) Twice after I signed in all that would load was my screensaver. On the third attempt, finally, it logged in properly but was performing even slower that the day before - the most routine tasks like transferring an album on to my external is taking three to four minutes - and I'm being met with a barrage of similar error messages:

ctfmon.exe (0xc0000005), soffice.exe (0xc0000142), rundll32.exe (0xc0000142).

So, my question is, how likely is it that I'm still infected? There doesn't seem to be any obvious signs of infiltration (other than these error messages) yet the darn thing is reacting so slow.

I downloaded the OTL program and scanned but I can't post my logs due to the soffice.exe and notepad.exe errors.

Anyone any advice? I'm going crazy here...

Thanks in advance

Managed to open OTL files but I'm not sure if you want me to post the whole thing as it's massive. I'll do it but if I've done it wrong just post back and I'll edit.

Hope that helps.

I'm being driven towards a complete re-installation though.

Thanks again.

Re: Antivira removed... yet still infected?

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hey Belahzur, thanks for the replies. They're much appreciated. Ran Combo-Fix and after the reboot the laptop's certainly running a lot quicker. Also, it opened first time with no .EXE errors. Here's the ComboFix text document from my hard drive:

ComboFix 11-02-26.01 - Me 28/02/2011 19:08:32.1.1 - FAT32x86
Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.44.1033.18.766.396 [GMT 0:00]
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Me\My Documents\NZB Downloads\Combo-Fix.exe
AV: Kaspersky Anti-Virus *Disabled/Updated* {2C4D4BC6-0793-4956-A9F9-E252435469C0}
FW: Online Armor Firewall *Disabled* {B797DAA0-7E2E-4711-8BB3-D12744F1922A}

Thanks again. NDY

Hello.
The log is 90% missing, can you run Combofix again and post the newer log?

Hello.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello.

I see that you are running Vuze.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    Adobe Reader 7.0
    Vuze
    Vuze_Remote Toolbar

Your Java needs updating!

  • Please go to Start > Control Panel, click on Java.
  • When the Java control panel opens, go into the Update tab.
  • At the bottom of that window, press the "Update Now" button and it will attempt to download the latest Java update.
  • Next, the Updater window opens, hit the Install button. It will now attempt to download the update.
  • Untick the box for installing the Yahoo Toolbar when asked.

Then download and install Adobe Reader X

How is the machine running now?

Hey Belahzur, followed you're advice but the computer is still performing very slowly. For example while I am typing this the characters are not appearing until three or four seconds after.

It's also taking a long time to start up which I thought may have been due to the programmes that open when windows does; but I cut them right back and the computer still takes a while to load.

I'm pretty sure it's virus free, or seems that way to me. The pace of the machine is just not it's usual pacy self. Could it be a memory issue?

Hello.
Your machine could use a hardware upgrade, your RAM count is quite low compared to what machines need for todays software to be able to run on. A new boost of better RAM would help greatly.

Okay Belahzur; thanks. Couple more questions though: how much RAM is in my computer just now? What should I consider upgrading to? how costly will it be?

Also thanks for all your help and replying to my topics.

It only has 768mb in it at the moment, likely a 256mb + a 512mb, if I was you and had the money, if you can upgrade to atleast 1.5gb, then go for it, even better if you can get 2gb.
