antivirus, spyware and firewalls?

Post by queenbee125 on Sun Dec 12, 2010 5:56 pm

I really am pretty stupid when it comes to antivirus software. I recently purchased the full paid version of malwarebytes. I would like to scrap McAfee and try the windows security essentials in its place but am not sure if it replaces the malwarebytes or if the two can run at the same time. Also do i still need a firewall program and which would be compatable with malwarebytes and windows security essentials. These are probably really dumb questions but I am old and truly computer stupid. Any advice?

You can run MBAM alongside MS Security Essentials.

You do not really need a firewall, because Windows already has one. However, this firewall is a bit weak. You can install a third party firewall, if your computer is up to the task of running this extra software. The following software firewalls are good and free:

These firewalls should all work problemless alongside MBAM and MS Security Essentials. And if it does not, uninstall it and pick another one from the list.

i have to say from what i have read example "Windows built-in firewall does not attempt to manage or restrict outbound connections at all. It appears to be a useful firewall for hiding the machine from the Internet, but you will still need to use a good third-party personal firewall if you wish to manage and control outbound connections from your system."

here a couple of suggestions

i am not sure on their compatibility with your current system but as stated so well by Gabethebabe try one if it dont go try an other

Sygate Personal FW (FREE)
Tiny Personal FW (FREE)
ZoneAlarm (FREE)

what ever you use surely somethings better than nothing

Control of outbound connection is overrated imho.

With half-decent navigating practices and a good resident antivirus/spyware it is pretty hard to infect a clean system, making control of outbound traffic redundant.

Gabethebabe imho I am on the other side of the fence regarding outbound traffic (each to their own). This is just just another layer of protection, that i think firewalls should do or at-least attempt too, as not all firewalls do or even try. A little bit more info for queenbee125 to know that if you do get infected when your malware / antivirus or whatever didnt pick it up straight away this feature could help by letting him know that there is a program using his system/internet to communicate without his knowledge, alerting him that something is going right under his nose , the faster you know the better! nothing is fool proof Microsoft made sure of that ! Let me think

The problem with 3rd party firewalls is they are often unclear and leaving the protection in the users hands. I don't recommend anything, but the windows firewall to most users anymore becuase of this. More often it does no good as they are allowing everything.
