tfsnifs.sys problem. AVG says Object hidden by a rootkit technique (post1)

Post by DeeCee on Sun Dec 12, 2010 2:18 pm

Hi all again,
My laptop seems infected. First noticed slow startup and shutdown - did the usual clearing junk in startup processes which didn't make a lot of difference. Recently noticed wireless connection problems which the wizard fixed now 'my network places' taking a looooonnnngg time or hanging and 'not responding'. Realised my free AVG had a rootkit scan so I used it and found problems with tfsnifs.sys reporting:-
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfsnifs.sys";"IRP hook, \FileSystem\Cdfs IRP_MJ_FILE_SYSTEM_CONTROL -> tfsnifs.sys GetSystemType+0xBFD1";"Object is hidden"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfsnifs.sys";"IRP hook, \FileSystem\Fs_Rec IRP_MJ_FILE_SYSTEM_CONTROL -> tfsnifs.sys GetSystemType+0xBE94";"Object is hidden"
AVG software says it can remove but message states 'Object hidden by a rootkit technique (which is usually used by a malicious software) do you really want to remove it?' The only options are Yes or No i.e. no option for 'I'm not sure'. Your advice would be most welcome
Not quite sure how long I've had this as I don't use the laptop frequently. I understand this file is part of 'Sonic' software used for recording to CD. I fired this up a couple of weeks ago to see what it did but didn't actually try to record anything.

Regards to all

DeeCee

Re: tfsnifs.sys problem. AVG says Object hidden by a rootkit technique (post1)

Hi,

Please download ComboFix from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I'm livin' life in the fast lane.

Hi Sneakyone,
Hadn't tried it while I waited for your comment but I shall now and report. From the foregoing, do you think it might have been a false positive from AVG? The proof would be to reinstall AVG and rerun AVG rootkit scan (always assuming I still have a problem). Anyway I'll run it for a day or two and post again.

Thanks very much

Hi,

It wasn't necessarily a rootkit, but it was detected because it was hidden. It is a legit driver and I didn't see any malware anywhere else.

Rootkit scans with AVG aren't reliable.

Thanks Sneakyone,
looks like you hit it right (again) seems ok now and there are many reports of false +s from AVG but it seems to be that rootkit rats use the same techniques as legit writers.
Thanks again hope you had a peaceful festive season Big Grin

Regards to all
