How do I get rid of Hard Drive Diagnostic?

Post by Articuno on Mon 06 Dec 2010, 3:57 pm

My computer was infected by it a few hours ago so I used Malwarebytes, scanned my computer and removed it. I turned off my computer because I was leaving my home and I came back, turned on my computer and Hard Drive Diagnostic installed itself again. I don't know if it installed itself again or it wasn't removed in the first place but can anyone tell me how to get rid of it permanently?

Hi,

Please download OTL to your Desktop. (If you already have it downloaded, then just follow the instructions below).

  • Click the Run Scan button.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) and paste (Edit->Paste) the contents of these files, one at a time into your thread

Note: in the event that OTL fails to run, please use alternate download links to try again:

Re: How do I get rid of Hard Drive Diagnostic?

Post by Crush on Wed 08 Dec 2010, 10:44 am

Hi,

Please download ComboFix from BleepingComputer.com

Alternate link: GeeksToGo.com

Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe before you save it to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools A guide to do this can be found here
  • Click Start>Run then copy paste the following command into the Run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\commy.exe" /stepdel
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I can't download ComboFix because it says it's a corrupt download and I should download a fresh version of ComboFix.

Is it important to rename it? Because when I downloaded it it didn't save onto the desktop and I couldn't change the name.

Well I tried to download ComboFix again and this time a blue box popped up and said it's going to download the latest version of ComboFix and when it finished downloading the latest version my computer crashed. So I don't think it's safe for me to use ComboFix sorry.

Alright. Let's see if we can get some of the malware off your infected machine first before using ComboFix.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log

It crashed my computer again so I shut it down manually by holding on to the power button and turned it back on. When I turned it back on the HDD icon was just a white box and the HDD did not pop up. Does this mean that it has been deleted or something else?

Let's make sure everything is gone.

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Follow that up by running OTL once more and posting that log here
