Think Point has taken over!!!! Help!

Post by JonesL17 on Sat 20 Nov 2010, 1:05 am

Hi Guys,

First post here so be kind!

I am in no way a techie so please, layman terms if possible!

Basically I have the Think Point virus. I followed the online instructions on how to get rid, booting in safe mode, downloading malwarebytes, scanning removing etc etc. I thought it had worked but apparently not!

While I was using my laptop it shut down on its own and when I tried to turn it back on, it boots (I can hear it, the light comes on etc.) but the screen is just black

I can get into the BIOS Utility Setup screen and from there I can get into the menu to choose start up with safe mode but it won't start with safe mode. In fact I've tried ALL of the options and none of them will boot up. Most options I select result in the black screen.

When I select the safe mode option it starts to boot but then hangs after a few seconds, the last filepath it hangs on is:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys

I'm not sure what else to tell you.

The laptop is an Asus Eee PC
OS is XP Home Edition.
Just thought it might be relevant to mention that this laptop does not have a disc drive.

Any help at all would be much appreciated

Hello.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Thanks for the reply!

This is where the "layman terms" part comes in though :/

I can't get the laptop to boot up into ANY mode whatsoever so how do I run the above program?

I can download it on a clean computer and put it on a USB but the only screen I have access to on the infected one is the BIOS Utility Setup (?)

Confused!

Thanks again!

Hello.

We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using ISO Burner.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings

    • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
    • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
    • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
    • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
    • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

Thanks, but as mentioned in my original post the laptop doesn't have a disc drive. Can I download it to a USB and boot from that?

Thanks.

Hello.

OTLPE on a Flash Drive:

IMPORTANT:
You will need a flash drive with a size of 512 Mb or bigger. Make sure that you do not leave anything important on the flash drive, as all data on it will be deleted during the following steps.

    • Download OTLPEStd.exe from one of the following links and save it to your Desktop: mirror1 or mirror2
    • Download eeepcfr.zip from the following link and save it to your Desktop: the mirror
    • Finally, if you do not have a file archiver like 7-zip or Winrar installed, please download 7-zip from the following link and install it: the mirror

  • Once you have 7-zip installed, decompress OTLPEStd.exe by rightclicking on the folder and choosing the options shown in the picture below. Please use a dedicated folder, for example OTLPE, on your Desktop
  • Open the folder OTLPEStd which will be created in the same location as OTLPEStd.exe and right-click OTLPE_New_Std.iso. Select 7-Zip and from the submenu select Extract files... and extract the content onto your Desktop in a OTLPE folder:
  • Please also decompress eeepcfr to your systemroot (usually C:\).
  • Empty the flash drive you want to install OTLPE on.
  • Go to C:\eeecpfr and double-click usb_prep8.cmd to launch it.
  • Press any key when asked to in the black window that opens.
  • As indicated in the image, make sure you have selected the correct flash drive, before proceeding.
For Drive Label: type in OTLPE.
Under Source Path to built BartPE/WinPE Files click ... and select the folder OTLPE that you created on your Desktop.
    Finally check Enable File Copy.
  • Click on Start, accept the disclaimers and wait for the program to finish.

  • Your bootable flash drive should now be ready!

Done all of the above but the system won't boot from the USB. It recognises the usb in the boot menu in BIOS i select it, it starts to boot, then hangs on a screen saying ' remove media or other device, press any key to restart'

Afraid not much I can do then, if it's a work laptop, just give them it back and ask for a better one, lol.
