Solved thinkpoint - looking for reassurance

Post by tiburonfirst on Sun Oct 24, 2010 10:21 pm

hi, i'm basically hoping i have nothing to worry about anymore. yesterday my laptop got infected by thinkpoint which brought everything to a standstill. after much aggravation i thought to enter windows xp through my son's account. we originally had configured the laptop for 2 users and was so able to get to system restore. then i ran malwarebytes which removed another 4 infected files. can i assume all is well now?
this was the worst experience i ever had, and looking at all the methods you recommend to remove thinkpoint, i'm not sure that my simple steps were enough.
thanks so much

Hello.

Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - Please PM me if I fail to respond within 24hrs.

Solved Re: thinkpoint - looking for reassurance

Post by tiburonfirst on Tue Oct 26, 2010 12:42 pm

i need some more instructions. all i have on is an old adware program which stopped updating a year ago but i was never able to uninstall since there seems to be a file missing.
also, the combofix shows up as combofix.exe, do i rename to combo-fix or combo-fix.exe? i'm a little confused since further down in the instructions it says to click on combofix.exe but wouldn't that have been renamed already?
sorry to be a pain but i don't want to do anything wrong

Solved Re: thinkpoint - looking for reassurance

Post by tiburonfirst on Wed Oct 27, 2010 3:15 pm

another problem - i told you i had uninstalled ms security essentials but seen the process running in task manager. i tried to reinstall to make sure i could disable it properly as per your instruction but got the message 'only one copy allowed' which means it did not uninstall properly and i have no way of knowing if the real-time protection is running. i emailed ms support:
"Security Essentials was uninstalled by mistake through add/remove programs. Trying to reinstall i'm getting message 'only one copy allowed on computer' so apparently the uninstall failed. going to add/remove programs again it shows 11.3mb but when i click remove i'm getting 'file for install not found'
thanks for any help you can give me"
i will wait on the response from ms and then proceed with your instructions.
thanks for your patience

Solved Re: thinkpoint - looking for reassurance

Post by Belahzur on Fri Oct 29, 2010 11:45 pm

Hello.

  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    Code:

    FCopy::
    c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\es.dll | c:\windows\System32\es.dll
  4. Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

  5. Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
  7. Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Solved Re: thinkpoint - looking for reassurance

Post by tiburonfirst on Mon Nov 01, 2010 11:45 am

i will follow those steps later on today and report back.
2 questions though - i still have otl on my desktop and, searching for the eset log, i came across 4 or 5 other eset files. do those stay?

update - steps completed and there is possibly a slight improvement. it's been a rough day since quickbooks refused to open due to a fatal error [this started after the cleanup]. outlook express also failed to download my mail twice, third time it went through so maybe this is not related.

will await your instructions on otl and eset files
thank you

Hello.
You can remove the OTL files and ESET logs.

The general slowness is caused by your lack of decent hardware, as you have very little RAM in this machine.
