Unknown System Issues

Post by Voods on Tue 14 Sep 2010, 10:08 pm

It's been a while, but my system has been playing up again..

I have been having continual freezes, and slagggish speed.. Also problems with bootin up and down, on occasions the computer locks upon boot up at the screen where you choose normal boot up or recovery console...

Since this has happened, my notifacation area has been going bonkers, and the volume icon never shows on boot up, so I have to use the taskbar repair tool, or reintall it using the XP disc.

I have ran the usual Super anti Spy and Malware bytes scans, with no infections shown... I can do fresh scans if required..

Could I possibly post a Hijack this log

Regards

Dave

Hello.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Hi

OTL still freezes at the same location..

I even tried to run it, with my protection disabled, and then tried it in safe mode, and it still froze.

Hello.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste BOTH LOGS back here, use more than one post if needed.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hello.
The BSOD could be because of Folder Locker, it caused BSOD's on my laptop too.

If you don't use it, uninstall it, see if you still get BSOD's.

There might be some confusion, I haven't actually had a BSOD this time yet...
But I will uninstall it anyhow, as I was only giving it a test drive..!

Did anything unusual show up in the Combofix or DDS logs?

Hello.

No, Combofix looked fine, just some updates to do.

I see that you are running eMule and µTorrent.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    µTorrent
    Java(TM) 6 Update 20

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 21.
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

Your VLC Player also needs updating.

Download and install VLC Player 1.1.4
When installing, it will ask if you want to uninstall the old version first before it can install the new version, so please select yes and allow it to install.

How is the machine running now?

Yes, give JavaRa a quick run, but don't post the JavaRa log, don't need to see that.

Well, after week, I have still been having some instability issues... Usual laggish behaviour... and the dreaded BSOD..... There appears to be no specific message on the screen, regarding the error, and as I can't analyse them, I am clueless.

All I can say is the system tried to shut down after I tried to print something from a webpage, it has been a while since I have had one.

Was it just a one off freak occurence?

Hello.

Please download BlueScreenVew.

  1. Open the program, and highlight the latest minidump.
  2. Click the Save button on the top toolbar.
  3. Post the log back here.
