2 Antivirus's??

Post by MiniRadi on Wed Aug 18, 2010 4:23 am

This maybe be a noobish question but I would like to know the answer to it. I have been looking around for AGES to find the answer.

Anyway my question is, can I have 2 antivirus's installed on my computer at any one time??

It is highly recommend not to. Though it may be possible with modern antivirus software, you shouldn't.

It may cause conflict, you may experience a drag while using the computer, crashes, or it may not even boot into normal mode.

Stick to one, and you'll be fine. :smile2:

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. Also, more than one anti-virus program installed as they will conflict with each other and cause problems.

I run Avast and Anivir together on all my computers (5 total). They have been running together flawlessly for me so far. The slowest comp has a 2.2Ghz dual core with only 4 gigs of ram. I haven't had a problem (yet). Will there be an issue down the road as the computers age? If I should only run one, what's better. Avast or Antivir? Or, what do you think is the best (paid or not) anti-virus out there with the ability to run on 5 computers without having to purchase one for each?

Hi MiniRadi,

You can run an antivirus and antimalware in real-time such as Avira and Malwarebytes'. Nether will conflict as they work completely different. Mbam only checks memory and doesn't catch the full breadth of malware like avira.Smile

The point is not to run multiple background antivirus programs simultaneously. An example background program would be avast! or Avira.

Standalone scanners that don't run in the background/have "real time" scanning (such as Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware) can installed in whatever quantity as long as they aren't run at the same time.

As for AdkWoody's post... dual cores with "only 4 gigs of ram" is not slow by most people's standards.

Hey MiniRadi,

I wouldn't recommend running 2 Antivirus programs together. If they both find the same virus, you're going to have a nasty situation as they both try to remove it.
