Infected with I believe Vundo (Bankerfox.A and Nuqel.E)

Post by KittyLenali on Wed 04 Aug 2010, 5:14 am

Running Windows Vista 64bit desktop. Disconnected the desktop from the network and am currently running in safe mode.

Stupid me used Bittorrent for something. I started getting popups about corrupted files (if it matters, some included mobsync.exe and rundll32.exe.) CTRL+ALT+DEL options panel was disabled. Shut off computer after hitting it multiple times, but I got many errors on a black screen when I hit it the first time instead of seeing the typical options.

Malwarebytes quick scan revealed 2 infected objects (report included, no action taken yet), and I was able to download OTL and move it from this computer to the infected desktop. Also ran the custom scan listed in the "Read this first" topic. Here's the reports:

Malwarebyte's report:

Scan type: Quick scan
Objects scanned: 134001
Time elapsed: 5 minute(s), 2 second(s)

Further research suggests that it's called "Vundo". Still sitting in Safe mode. Kinda nervous to attempt anything without help; I don't wanna have to reformat and lose my files!

Thank you for looking!

Hello.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

Please run OTL.exe.

  • Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :OTL
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [pkwqphmf] C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\lofubvcsr\kadyybntssd.exe ()
    [2010/08/03 08:46:41 | 000,000,000 | ---D | C] -- C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\lofubvcsr

  • Return to OTL, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) and choose Paste.

  • Click the red Run Fix button.
  • A fix log in Notepad will appear. Copy the contents of the fix log to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTL.exe
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

It seems Malwarebytes was able to remove the .exe file. Here's the log:

========== OTL ==========
Registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\pkwqphmf not found.
File C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\lofubvcsr\kadyybntssd.exe not found.
C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\lofubvcsr folder moved successfully.

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.9.0 log created on 08032010_172350

Scanning now. As an interesting off-note, I just noticed that my recycle bin is gone. So far I can change my security settings back to the way they were (they were all shut off and hidden before) and I have no popups or errors. Still paranoid about turning my internet back on, due to having some financial information saved to some websites.

Will post the scan soon. Thank you so much!

Something is definitely still there. My brother connected his external harddrive to the computer to try and backup some files, and a folder appeared on it, hidden, named "$recycle.bin". He didn't open the folder, but says it's a virus.
It's a 1TB harddrive.

Oddly enough, the same files that copied to it aren't copied to the 63Gig USB drive I've been using through the process. Perhaps it's too small?

Either way, something is still up, it's just being quiet. Malwarebytes doesn't see it.

Sorry, I was out of town for a few days..

I ran it, but checked uninstall when it completed so the folder isn't there anymore. 2 hour scan came up clean, though.

Should I rescan so you have a log?

Hello.
No, if it came up clean, then all should be good.

I see that you are running Limewire.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.

  • Click Start >> Control Panel.
  • Under the Programs click Uninstall a Program
  • Highlight the following:

    Adobe Reader 8.1.4
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) 6 Update 13
    LimeWire 5.5.13

  • Click on the Uninstall/Change button at the top.

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 21.
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

Then download and install Adobe Reader 9.3.3

How is the machine running now?

It runs good now! It's gone back to how it was before.

I really appreciate the help you gave me in clearing this up. Thank you very much! I'm going to update some programs and drivers now and be more careful about what I download (No more P2P for me!).
