Help! Can't even get on the internet on this infected computer to download!

Post by ltlfroggie on 23rd June 2010, 8:20 pm

My boss (owner of the company) handed me his laptop and told me to fix it. From the story he told me (he is an older gentleman, his wife mostly uses the computer) one of those "you have a virus" windows popped up and she clicked on it not knowing any better. Mass destruction!

I was able to get into safe mode and run the Symantec Endpoint Protection program and at least get rid of the bazillion messages that were popping up saying it had a virus. I also ran Spybot and it got rid of one or two things.

The problem I'm having is that it is still not working right...I can't even get on the internet (and yes, the Wifi is connected)...it goes to load it, and then goes to the "not connected page".

When the computer first turns on into Windows, a pop up window opens that says:
Windows - Registry Recovery
One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful.

I haven't been pushing "OK", I've been right clicking on the window on the task bar and closing it that way. Not sure if that is a real "pop up" or a virus pop up.

I need someone to walk me through what the heck to do with this thing, since I can't get on to the internet. I have a Mac (which is what I'm on) he has a PC (HP laptop). I have a thumb drive I can use to transfer programs/files.

Thanks in advance!

Jackie

Hello.

Hello.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet Explorer and/or in FireFox.

    In Internet Explorer
  1. Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

    In Firefox
  1. Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"
  2. Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

Do you have a working connection now?

Download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Re: Help! Can't even get on the internet on this infected computer to download!

Post by Belahzur on 23rd June 2010, 11:50 pm

Please run OTL.exe.

  • Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :OTL
    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [] File not found
    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [ixphhiws] C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\bdbbqmrln\kfofrgwtssd.exe File not found
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [ixphhiws] C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\bdbbqmrln\kfofrgwtssd.exe File not found
    [2010/06/21 19:46:32 | 000,000,000 | ---D | C] -- C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\bdbbqmrln

  • Return to OTL, right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the light green bar) and choose Paste.

  • Click the red Run Fix button.
  • A fix log in Notepad will appear. Copy the contents of the fix log to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTL.exe
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Re: Help! Can't even get on the internet on this infected computer to download!

Post by Belahzur on 24th June 2010, 9:38 pm

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Re: Help! Can't even get on the internet on this infected computer to download!

Post by Belahzur on 25th June 2010, 7:46 pm

Hello.

  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    Code:

    DDS::
    uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
    uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride =
  4. Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

  5. Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
  7. Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.
