Solved Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by grasshopper on Fri Jun 18, 2010 3:47 pm

Hi Folks, Well I am another victim of the AV Security Suite infection.

To recap what I have done over night. I have a registered copy of AVG antivirus installed.

I has full scanned the system twice using Malware with the newest update. Both time is found things that it needed to remove. I removed them of course. However the icon in the tray and popups contnued. I then ran the Online scanner fromeset.com and that found the Kryptik.ETK trojan. After a reboot the AV Security Suite tray icon and the popup stopped.

I thought I was out of the woods... My internet for IE didn't work but the FireFox did. I looked at the settings in Tool, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings and noticed that the two top boxes were not checked but both proxy server boxes were (no address or port values). I looked at another system of mine and nothing was check so I unchecked them all and IE cam up fine.

I then took the advise of those on this board and I installed SpywareBlaster and Armor Firewall. Everything was looking good...

I then noticed that my Audio drivers were not installed and when I went to the internet to search for a possible solution the pages that were displayed were not the pages I clicked on. I had read in a forum that this happened to someone else.

I then decided (against the advice of the ComboFix site) toinstall and run ComboFix since it seemed to be the first thing that is asked for. Although it took a number of reboots, it completed and the Log file is below.

I would appreciate any help ya'll could provide me. I am still not out of the woods but I tried as much as I could.

Thank you very much.

Eric

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by Crush on Fri Jun 18, 2010 8:49 pm

Hi User,

Welcome to GeekPolice Forums! I'm Crush but, you can call me Chris too Smile and I will be helping you with your Malware issues.

A few things to keep in mind as we progress:

1. We are all volunteer staff here so we log in and assess threads when real life, work, family, and other obligations permit. Additionally, we are located all over the world. There may be a bit of a time delay due to this.

2. Malware Removal threads are very time intensive. Each entry must be researched until it can be said with 100% certainty whether or not it can stay or needs to be removed. Sometimes additional work is needed to weed out suspect entries

3. This may turn into a long ordeal but, rest assured we will stay with you until you are completely disinfected.

4. Only Tech Officers, Global Moderators, Administrators, and Malware Advisors are allowed to give advice on removing malware from your computer. Do not run any tools unless specifically asked to by a member of one of these usergroups

5. If you are not the original poster of this thread DO NOT run any fixes given to the poster in this thread. They are all custom tailored specifically to this user. It could prove to be disastrous.

6. Please keep responding until I give you the "All Clear". Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

7. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

8. If you have any questions or issues please stop and ask! We are all here to help.

IMPORTANT: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly Smile.

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted.

To do this click , then click Preferences. Make sure Always notify me of replies is set to Yes

With that out of the way:

ComboFix should not be run without the guidance of a helper!

It is a powerful tool and is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private or regular use.

See ComboFix's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Please refer to this thread for more information on why you shouldn't use ComboFix without supervision of a trained expert: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
======

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
Alternate link: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].
(Note: if you already have the program installed, just follow the directions. No need to re-download or re-install!)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

(Note: if you already have the program installed, open Malwarebytes from the Start Menu or Desktop shortcut, click the Update tab, and click Check for Updates, before doing the scan as instructed below!)

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If you are prompted to restart, please allow it to restart your computer. Failure to do this, will cause the infection to still be active on the computer.
  • Please save the log to a location you will remember.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • The log can also be found at C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Hi,

Is this PC used in an enterprise environment? It looks like you have some entries that suggest so. If not, please let me know.

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by grasshopper on Sun Jun 20, 2010 5:54 pm

Hi Chris,

I am not sure what is ment by an enterprise environment.

I have three systems that are networked together (workgroups). The infected system has access to both VPN client (but I have not accessed their system in a few weeks and my VPS server that holds my test website that I am working on.

Does that help?

Also, I used MalewareBytes to scan my exernal drive and also ran my AVG virus checker on that drive both cam back with nothing bad found. I can provide the MalwareBytes log if needed.

Thanks,

Eric

Hi Eric Smile

Thanks. That confirms what I need. Do you have a logon script running?

Looking at this entry prompted me to ask the question about the enterprise environment

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\group policy\state\S-1-5-21-3713959246-320310600-2471480639-1178\scripts\Logon\0\0]
"script"=logon.bat

Do you know what that file it?

I do not know what that Bat file is. I don't think it is something I created but the system ia a number of years old and who knows what I have done previously.

Hi Eric Smile

After conferring with a fellow Expert that batch file is fine, and should be there. Would you mind posting that MBAM log along with any issues you currently have?

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by grasshopper on Sun Jun 20, 2010 6:57 pm

I have switched to my other system because I cannot view the last entry I made as well as your newest entry on this topic. But I can see them on my other system.

With respect to the MBAM log, are you looking for the log that was made when I searched my external drive? I only did the external drive and not all drives. The most recent MBAM log for the infect system is the one posted above. Would you like me to run it again? Takes about 6 plus hours.

On the surface my system seems fine but like others have mentioned on the forum when I use IE (not sure firefox has the same issue) I get weird results. Yesterday when I did a search for Installing XP audio drives I got a list of places to click on (normal). However, no matter what I clicked (like I clicked on a Microsoft site link) it would not take me there but take me to another site that was selling some software. This was happening on every link.

I just did some additional checking and the problem above is no longer happening. Or at least on the few sites I clicked on. I closed and reopened the IE browser and I was still unable to see the newest post that you and I had made to this forum. I rebooted, and cleared the cookies and temp files and I am now able to see the new postings. I am still posting this from my other system.

What I have also found is that all of my Favorites in IE (and I have many) are no longer URL links. You know when you go into Organize Favorites and click on a link the link shows the URL. On my system with the virus the link has been changes to a shortcut and the file is listed in a folder in the document area but it is a shortcut and not accessable.

I just tried to create another favorites in a new folder in IE. I went to a site I know click Favoites, Add Favorite and then created a new folder and added the favorite in the new folder. If made the favorite a shortcut file and not a favorite link.

Another thing, Just as a note, as I mentioned initially I have lost both my video and audio drivers. I am still able to view and hear sound but not with the drivers that were installed for my new monitor and Audio setup.

I am so much in pain at this point...

Additional Information:

I just attempted to open the newly created shortcut up with notepad

This is what I see.

[DEFAULT]
BASEURL=http://www.hikingandcampingstuff.com/
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.hikingandcampingstuff.com/
Modified=A037BADCA910CB01F2

Information is correct but it is a shortcut and not a Favorites link.

Nah just looking for the one on your external please Smile

I found something I glanced over. This is probably the root of you issue

Re-running ComboFix to remove infections:

  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    DDS::
    uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:1038

  4. Save this as CFscript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

  5. Referring to the picture above, drag CFscript into ComboFix.exe
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
  7. Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Okay I'm not too bright here. I looked but I cannpt find where to inactivate my AVG virus or MalwareBytes

I don't have Malwarebytes on anything automatic. Is my AVG a service that I should shut down?

No worries. Disabling the AV is just a precaution so ComboFix isn't blocked. You can safely run the fix without doing so.

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by Crush on Mon Jun 21, 2010 1:01 am

Hi Eric,

That fix didn't take. Let's just do it manually Smile

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet explorer and/or in FireFox.

In IE: Tools Menu ->Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings -> uncheck use a proxy server or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

In Firefox in Tools Menu>Options...Advanced Tab. Network Tab -Settings under Connection Choose No Proxy

Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode.

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Hi Chris,

A couple of things before I reboot. Both IE and Firefox settings were already set the way you wanted them to be. I am going to reboot now.

I had turned the system off earlier (am I not suppose to do that? When I turned it back on and went to GeekPolice.net my browser took me to another site. and would not go to your site. I rebooted again and was able to get to your site and check the proxy setting as I mentioned above. I will reboot now.

Then what would you like me to do?

Eric

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by Crush on Mon Jun 21, 2010 1:45 am

Hi Eric,

That's really odd. Let's try the fix again. But first, there are a few issues apparent in the last run that might have prevented it from working correctly

Running from: c:\downloads\ComboFix\ComboFix.exe

This should be running from the desktop for pure convenience. It makes the fix easier to do Smile

Command switches used :: c:\documents and settings\Eric\Desktop\CFscript.txt.lnk

Also, please make sure you save the file as CFScript.txt in Notepad.
on to your Desktop. Below are the rest of the instructions

Re-running ComboFix to remove infections:

  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    DDS::
    uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:1038

Hi Chris, Log is below... A couple of things during the process.

I have the Online Armor on, should I have turned this off or does it matter?
I got a popup that stated NirCmd.cfxxe is blocked to get list of files h:\*.* (my eternal drive is H:) Should I have that disconnected?
Last, I got another popup that stated Google has blocked attempts to change default search setttings.

Not sure if any of the above matter but thought I would mention them.

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by grasshopper on Mon Jun 21, 2010 2:56 am

It happened during the ComboFix run, the error displayed as an icon in my tray in the lower right of the screen. the icon is currntly not there.

I don't know how I would reproduce it. I expect it would pop up if I ran Comboxix again.

Your thoughts...

Hi Chris,

I am not sure why I should change this. I want to keep Google as my default search engine (don't I?)

You've got a proxy infection that's preventing you from changing it. You'll just need to confirm the change to remedy the infection Smile

Okay, I turned off the "Set and keep Google as my default Search Engine" Should I rerun the ComboFix?

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by Crush on Mon Jun 21, 2010 5:50 am

Hi again.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by grasshopper on Tue Jun 22, 2010 10:25 am

Hi Chris,

Scan finally finished... a couple of things.

When I first started the Full scan (after the express) the system rebooted on me. Told me ...

OA Crash dump. and a folder and filename of the dump file. I attempted to look at it with notepad but it not a text file. I of course can send it if needed.

Also when I rebooted (after Dr. Web) the PC ran a chkdsk process (completed successfully).

Dr. Web found one virus it cured. nothing else.

BTW. Dr. Webs screens have changed and a few of the steps above are not the same...FYI

Here if the contents of the csv file... Thanks again!

Eric

avgldx86.sys;C:\Qoobox\32788R22FWJFW;BackDoor.Tdss.2459;Cured.;

I cannot open the CureIt log file. I tried Noepad, WordPad, and Word. The filesize is 331,959 KB (huge). Your thoughts...

Scan was large and took about 24 hours to complete I can't remember the number of files but close to 2 million I think (I scanned the external drive as well).

Hey Eric,

Thanks. Those instructions must be a bit dated. Anyway, the only thing it picked up was a file quarantined by combofix. Are things running any better now?

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by grasshopper on Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:59 pm

Hi Chris,

You know, I have not been using the system much because I didn't want to do something that would taint any scan results.

In general the system is the same as before the last scan (where it found the last virus) . The problem with the system going to the wrong internet page seems to be cleared up (with the small few tests I just tried).

It seems that I am able to re-install my audio and video drivers.

All of my favorites are still shortcuts (is there an application that would convert those back?).

So for the little I have used it and on the surface it seems ok.

What would be your next step for me to do?

On a side note, I have two other systems that don't seem to be infected but was wondering if I should run one or more of the applications that I ran on this system. Your thoughts?

Should I go ahead and start working on the "previously" infected system now?

Thanks again,

Eric

A problem that still seems to be here is when I post to the forum and the screen comes back. I ca't see the newest post. If I go into IE and delete my temp files then I see the updated posts.

Do you have any ideas what might cause this?

This might be a forum issue. I'll see what I can do

All of my favorites are still shortcuts (is there an application that would convert those back?).

What do you mean by shortcut? Do they take you to the site? What about when you add a new one?

On a side note, I have two other systems that don't seem to be infected but was wondering if I should run one or more of the applications that I ran on this system. Your thoughts?

We could check those machines in separate threads

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Hi Chris, Sorry I am not up on doing quotes.

Item 1 - I don't think it is your site because I bring up the forum on my other system and the new posts are always there. All I need to do is refresh the browser if it is already on your site..

Item 2 - The shortcusts are not Internet short cuts but exploer (file) shortcuts. The icon is a square box with the little squares inside. Like a file. If you double click on them they do nothing. They have a file type of Internet shortcut. It appears that they may NOT be associated with a browser (ie) I have been looking around at this since the last post but have not found anything.

Item 3 - Yes, once this thing settles down I would appreciate opening up an additional thread to handle the two other systems. Thank you.

I will continue to look for this association or whatever it is.

Thanks,

Eric

Which browser does your issue occur in?

The shortcusts are not Internet short cuts but exploer (file) shortcuts. The icon is a square box with the little squares inside. Like a file. If you double click on them they do nothing. They have a file type of Internet shortcut. It appears that they may NOT be associated with a browser (ie) I have been looking around at this since the last post but have not found anything.

You might have to just re-create your favorites. I'll see if anyone else has some other ideas though.

As far as Malware goes, I think we're almost done here.

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Item -1
I am using IE 6 (I know but I don't like 7 and 8) I do like Firefox but have nor made the leap.

Item-2
When I create a new favorite it is the "wrong" type. I copied one of the bad links to my other system and it came up as an IE favorite and worked great.

So it is the way my "infected" system is looking at these files. Kinda like an association issue but I can't find how to associate these files. Still looking.

I will run the scan you requested and post the log file.

Therein is likely the cause of your issues. IE7 and 8 include a multitude of Security updates to protect you from this kind of stuff. I strongly recommend updating when we're done here.

When I create a new favorite it is the "wrong" type. I copied one of the bad links to my other system and it came up as an IE favorite and worked great.

So it is the way my "infected" system is looking at these files. Kinda like an association issue but I can't find how to associate these files. Still looking.

They are all stored here c:\documents and settings\%userprofile%\favorites

If there's an association issue this will pick it up

Please download [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

  • Extract it to Desktop and double click SREngLdr.EXE to run it
  • Select System Repair from the left pane.
  • Click on File Association
  • Select all entries that has an Error status click [Repair]
  • Refer to this image for an example:

  • In your case, it would be .EXE
  • Close SREng now.

Hi Chris,

ESET found the same Trojan as before. Thanks for the link above. I may wait until this is all clean before I run it.

What do you think my next step is?

Eric

Hi grasshopper,

That's odd. We deleted that folder a couple pages ago

Anyway, using Windows Explorer see if you can navigate to the following folder

C:\Documents and Settings\Eric\Local Settings\Application Data\ukcpenhtj\

Once there, please delete it
======

Did you run SReng to check for a file associations issue on those favorites links?

Hi Chris, Deleted folder above.

Ran System Repair Engineer. Found one error .CHM. Rebooted , Still have probelms with internet shortcut associations.

System Repair engineer keep displaying a blue box with a Warning "reminding me that following functions have mdified to abnormal values by unknown reasons

Entrypoint Error LoadLibraryExW
EntryPoint Error: FreeLibrary"

I click on details it lists the two entries

I attempt to fix but they don;t go away... even after rebooting.

Any ideas?

Thanks again,

Eric

Hey Chris....

First spot of sunshine. My Internet shortcuts are working now. WOW that is a relief!!!!

Thanks so much.

I scanned using ESET last night and was clean. Is there anything else I should run?

If not, should I run ESET (or something else) in the evenings to confirm the Trojan has not come back?

WOOHOO!! Hooray!

I'm pretty confident you're clean but give it a day or so, and if you experience any more errors like in your first post please let me know.

If not, we'll just do some cleanup and you can be on your way with a clean machine

Solved Re: Another AV Security Suite infection

Post by grasshopper on Thu Jun 24, 2010 7:31 pm

Thanks Chris,

One last thing. I have Online Armor running and I went to a site (emploment site) that I for the most part trust. It popped up wanting me to allow access to

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_wp.exe

I thought why would they need that and I blocked it. Now I have left the site and have only email and explorer up (now ie explorer as well) and I keep getting an information bubble (from the tray) with this information

aspnet_wp.exe, 1.1.4322.2463, (1.1.4322.2463)
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_wp.exe
Hash(MD5): 44EB2854E8A23A72BEAB9DAAB1A6E0CF

Can you shead some light on this? Should I allow it?

Thanks,

Eric

Lastly, we had talked about me scanning the other two systems I have. Is there a first step that I could do and if it finds anything then I will open another thread?

Hi Eric,

That's a legitimate file. You can safely allow it Smile. As for your other two machines, if you read the link in my signature entitled Pre-Posting Instructions that will guide you through the proper steps to get things rolling. Please create separate threads for the two machines so we can fix one in one thread and one in the other. I'll keep an eye out for them and if I'm not beaten to it by one of the other staff I'll guide you through the removal process in those two threads. You've been a pleasure to work with so far.
