Error Loading Opperating System

Post by Connelly90 on Wed 09 Jun 2010, 6:31 am

HI,

I am having a problem booting up my Toshiba Equium laptop. I run WIndows 7 and it had been working earlier today but when I got home from work and tried to boot it up, it displays themessage "Error Loading Opperating System" on a black screen. I have a copy of Windows 7 handy and put it in, tried to reinstall it but it seems the only option is to reinstall it at the cost of losing all my files, some of which are very important.

I'm not certain if this is a hardware or software error however the laptop is 3 years old now and has seen heavy use so i fear there is something wrong with the hardware.

I managed to get this through the startup repair using the Windows 7 DVD (which didn't work obviously )

[i]Startup Repair diagnostics and repair log

----------------------------------------
Boot sector for system disk partition is corrupt

Repair action: Boot sector repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x17

Is there a way to fix this without losing the files?

thanks

On the recovery disk, you could open a command prompt and try to recover at least something.

Open the command prompt and run these commands:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot

Use the recovery console on your windows disc to repair the OS. If you cannot repair it successfully.. I suggest using symantec ghost to create an image of your HDD to an external HDD or onto your slave drive. Then after your reload you can extract data from it and put it back onto your fresh reload.
