Would a new Hard Drive need a new OS?

Post by Vei Vigrith on Wed May 19, 2010 1:18 pm

Pretty much the question in the subject. However, I can admit that I don't know much about the functionality of the Hard Drive. Is an HD "THE" computer? Meaning, your OS and pretty much everything else is in the hardrive?

If I wanted to purchase a new hard drive for my computer would I need another OS?

Long story short, my compter got infected by the "Bankfox.A" and other Viruses that everyone's talking about. I tried rebooting my system to an ealier point in time but some of the infection still remains. So I tried restoring the factory settings. It seemed to work, but I got the dreaded blue screen of death asking to remove any new hardware. Now my computer doesn't even boot past the Dell logo with a disk read error.

My thoughts, rather than spend 600+ on a new setup, was just to aquire a new Hard Drive. At the moment I have no idea where my orignal startup disks are for the system but would that also be another option?

The hard drive holds all of the files of your computer, which includes the operating system.

So yes, a new hard drive will require a new OS install.

Thanks Theamp. I've been looking for an excuse to get rid of Vista and move to Windows 7 anyway. Hooray!

Actually, if I may ask one more question so I don't screw myself out of 250 bucks.

Since most of my options have failed in fixing my current system, that and I'm not paying $150 so some random tech can just look at my computer, could the virus still effect my new hard drive? Meaning, its screwed my current system, but once I remove my old HD and replace with a new one the Virus should be, literally, removed right? It's not goning to hide out in my motherboard or my CD drive or anything right?

And my apologies for the seemingly n00b questions. I can put computers together, but past that I'm like Joe Dirt..."I"m new! I don't know what to do!"

Sorry about not replying to this thread earlier.

Yes, the virus (or whatever you may have had) will be completely eradicated from the machine if you remove the old hard drive.
