Laptop DVD drive not recognised.

Post by jr48 on Sat May 15, 2010 12:00 pm

Hi,
This is my first post. A friend has an Advent 6311 laptop (Advent is an 'in house' brand of P.C. World computer superstore chain in the UK) it has T2390 chip and runs Vista Home Premium.
My friend has hardly ever used the machine and it's long out of warrantee but he has brought the thing to me to record a backup DVD. When I tried to do so I found that the DVD drive is not recognised. My friend tells me that nothing has changed so I assume it was never regognised but he failed to notice(!)
I can confirm that the drive is recognised in the BIOS, and I have tried uninstalling the drive in the hope that Vista will discover the drive on reboot with no luck. Can anyone assist please?

Specs
CPU Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2390 (1.86GHz)
Chipset Intel PM965 Express
BIOS Phoenix BIOS. Press F2 to enter
Memory 2GB 200pin DDR2 667MHz SODIMM (2 Memory Slots. Max 2GB)
Hard Drive 120GB SATA
CD Drive DVD±RW
Screen 17" Widescreen TFT (1440x900)
Video Card Intel GM965 (up to 256MB shared)
Webcam Built in
Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio
Modem Not installed
Network Card Realtek 8169/8168/8101 PCI/PCIe
RaLink Wireless Lan *
PC Card 1 x ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
Ports 1x Microphone
1x Headphone
3x USB 2.0
1x Kensington Lock
1x ExpressCard slot
1x 4-in-1 card reader (Supports SD, MS, MS Pro, and MMC cards)
1x LAN
1x S-Video (TV-Out)
1x VGA
Battery L51-4S2200-G1L3 (14.4v 2200mAh)
L51-4S2200-G1B1 (14.8v 2200mAh)

Googling indicates that this machine is a re-badged Uniwill L75II8 but since I'm not familiar with that brand it's not helpful to me. I include it here in the hope it may assist in identifying a cure.

Sounds like the DVD\CD drive is going bad or has already gone bad!
